Macassar / Cocobolo/ Bocote
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:08:00 PM »
I'm trying to compare wts. of said woods.Currently, I'm shooting one of cocobolo. While I like heavier risers for stability in the hand, I have no experience w/ the others. For those of you that do, I "wood" love your input.

In the quantities that make up a bow, all are relatively the same weight, 61 to 70 lbs per cu. ft.  Love the look of the macassar ebony, but it varies A LOT!!

Even more than the cocobolo or bacote.

I have both cocobola riser in 1 longbow and bacote in another longbow.  Love them both.

Lots of great woods out there, however my preferance is to stay with the heavies no matter their beauty.

Example: Possibly one cocobola version may be quite stable and have little to no hand shock. The bocote version is still stable yet requires an attached quiver to calm it down. I don't practise nor hunt with an attached quiver so riser wt is important to me.

Wow, Friend, that's some great data. I just cut and pasted it into a document so I could save it in my "cool stuff" file!

My favorite wood is Cocobolo and highly figured Macassar is my second favorite.

Bowwild and Snow Leopard...The data has been collected over the past couple of years. Seems like wood wt comes up frequently on TG and some have found this data beneficial. I find myself referencing and updating the data quite often.

Glad this data may be useful to some of our TG brothers and sisters.

Look into a Black Widow with the phenolic in the riser, very dense feeling to me.

Is there a good site to see samples of the better woods for a custom riser?
