Hey Walsh. You thinking DIY or guided? Don't need a guide for deer up there. Just curious as that would change the price a good bit, I would imagine. I'm definitely interested though either way. Looks like $85 for non res license and $150 for deer tag. Here's a random guide's rates off his website.

I know the prices vary but this is the only one I could pull up at work. They like to block everything here. Military base.....

I went to Kodiak a couple of years ago and was real pleased with the service that I got here. It was unguided they provided all meals and would take us out in the boat every morning and drop us off and pick us up in the evening. We went in late November early Dec.. When I do it again I plan on going earlier in November when the days are a little longer.

I am interested in 2012. I am a DIY kind of guy but would not have a problem doing some sort of cabin based hunt especially if it is a cheap Forrest Service cabin with good hunting nearby. Getting normal gear into the backcountry into the lower 48 is tough when you fly. I would imagine doing that in Alaska would be tougher.

All home made gear huh rich, where's the man-law pics??? I'll have to make it a point to get together with you sometime when I'm over so we can shoot.

I would be down to do a tradgang hunt of sorts, but I would like to keep the roster down to less than a crowd. I'd be more interested in a late season hunt too, rather than an alpine trip if there's more than just a few other guys.

Dad and I hunted Kodiak this past august.  We will possibly be in POW for bears and deer in 2012.

I wouldn't go though if you are thinking it is a one time deal.  I'd go back every year if I had to sell a kidney cept have a baby coming end of May.

If you are going to POW be in shape if you are going early in the season. The deer will be up in the alpine and it isn't easy getting there. I'm sure POW BOW can give you all the details on that. I've hunted POW a couple times and love it. Be prepared to get rained on. It is one of the wettest places on earth!

As far as the season dates go it's like this.
Rural residents units 1A, 2 and 3 July 24-Dec 31

The general season for non-rural resident both Ak residents and others Aug 1-Dec 31

HOWEVER

There is a large portion of the Island that is closed to non-rural residents from Aug 1 - Aug 15. The line runs roughly through the center of the island with the Northern half the closed section.  Basically the roaded portion of the Island is closed until Aug 16th.

This information is found in the Federal Subsistance regs and is referenced in the sate regs by the little star in the deer season section.

"Federal public lands on Prince of Wales Island, excluding the southeast portion (land south of the
West Arm of Cholmondeley Sound draining into
Cholmondeley Sound or draining eastward into
Clarence Strait), are closed to hunting of deer from Aug. 1–Aug. 15, except by Federally qualified subsistence users hunting under these regulations."

Is there a way of looking at hunter success, deer populations, etc? How has the last winter and this winter effected the deer population?

Maybe.  Rich, akdan and I may come down and pester Chuck "White Death" H.  Would be fun to set up a big comfy tent camp somewhere.

Steve I'm down for that,  Pretty much do that every year.

The way I measure hunter success are the white packages in the freezer and the backstraps on the grill.
