R/D Longbows, Need some opinions!
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:48:00 PM »
I don't want this to be a debate on whose is better. I just need some friendly advice. Looking for some names and info on longbow,s. Maybe a few pics would be nice. Really looking to get me one and need some input. I'm a recurve guy so I don't no much about who makes them and what to look for.

Thank's in advance, Jason

There are a lot of great bowyers around.  For my money, check out an Acadian Woods treestick, function and beauty all rolled up in one!  Comes in 56" too if you need a short bow!

Oh how I wish he'd make me a 2-piece treestick!

Here's the link:

Hill Country.  Tradways.com is a sponsor here and is the virtual front end for Roman Hershberger, the bowyer.

Fast, smooth, top notch quality.  Makes a great R/D limb.

I would like to stay with a one piece 60 to 64" in length, 50 to 55# in weight. I draw to a little over 30". I've shot a few here and there, but not enough to tell anything. I'm not to picky on woods, but if I'm buying I might as well get a purdy one.  :D

Thank's guy's, Jason

I've got a Stewart Slammer.  64" 55@28.  Great bow and I know there are a lot of folks here who agree.  Shoots fast, draws smooth.

You can see pics on his   site .

Herb Meland builds a dandy r/d longbow. You can get a one piece or a three piece t/d in lengths from 56"-66". Pronghorn Custom Bows.

Ben Graham makes great one piece and 3 piece longbows. Alpha Male is the plainer version , Kingfisher is the fancy wood model. Smooth pulling , fast and NO handshock. Great guy to deal with too. I have one of each.
Hummingbird Bows in North Carolinia. IMHO.
Thanks , Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

I own 3 Mohawks. Vince is a sponsor here as well. I have owned and shot a tremendous amount of bows. Out of all of them a Mohawk does it for me. He builds a reflex deflex longbow. D Shape when strung. Smooth to draw, fast, quiet, and  no handshock at all. Plus they are very reasonable and pretty to look at.

Lost Creek. You could spend a lot more money & still not get a better bow.

In no particular order - Kanati, Centaur, Lost Creek, Two Tracks, Shrew, Firefly, Zipper, Big Jim, and lots and lots of others.  I have not shot them all but lots of them.

The Firefly and Two Tracks were the quietest for me, Centaur the fastest, Zipper (although I have only shot the Revurve version, the grip is the same) and it was the prettiest!

In my opinion no one makes a better one than Dan Toelke's Whip. Beautifully made of beautiful woods, superbly mannered and from time of order to delivery takes about four weeks. check them out at  www.montanabows.com,  there is absolutely nothing not to like with Dan.

I shoot a Caribow Peregrine and it is a fine bow.  I don't have much experience with other longbows.

Well you got plenty of recommendations. Now it'll just take you 10 yrs of buying and selling to see which one you like. haha
I'm a recurve guy also. The Griffin R/D longbows are a great bow. I can switch back and forth without any trouble. The only problem with Griffin's is that you can't find them used very often and John has a 24-30 month waiting list. Sure am glad I found one. Awesome bow! Shoots right where you're looking, very quiet, pretty fast, very weight gain on the draw and very little vibration in the hand.    :clapper:
