Turkey Penetration
« on: March 17, 2011, 12:14:00 AM »
I was wondering how everyone feels about pass thrus on turkeys? I have heard some say they want the head to stay inside and not go thru. Just curious on what others think. I am all for the pass thru. JMO

Don't think it matters much either way. An arrow in the bird will not keep it from escaping. I have had very, very few complete pass throughs on what I would consider a perfect shot, even when I was shooting 80+ pounds from a wheel bow.

It really dont matter,I have never had a pass through and never lost one yet.,A broadhead that makes a big hole is more important.

I should have said I'm for a pass trhu if it happens..A buddy of mie is thinking about putting a washer or something behind the broadhead to prevent it from happening just not sure I wouldbe for that.

You may wish to do a 'search' There have been quite a few threads concerning this. There are many that design there set-up for a possible pass thru. There are some that don't.

I want maximum penetration with the largest 3 blade BH possible and wish for the blades themselves be the significant factor that would impede penetration. Pass thru's are desired and welcome but will be uncommon for me.

I've shot 3 birds with a 68 lb longbow at my 30 inch draw.  That's a "H" of a power stroke.  No pass throughs with a 160 gr snuffer.  My advise is don't worry about it AND use a string tracker.

The more penetration the better on any game. The more the broadhead cuts the greater the chance of retrieving the game.

Using something to "limit" penetration throws an unknown into the equation... how does one know how much it's going to limit penetration. All the way into the vitals? Or maybe not!!

Penetration of 625 grain arrow from 65# bow. Magnus I w/bleeder. Ten yard shot.

For trad bows I would not use anything to slow penetration you will not need it.  All the birds I have shot with my recurves and those I have witnessed of others did not get a complate pass thru and you want to use as large a head as you can to do as much damage to the birds as possible.  Don't worry about pass thrus on turkeys, your most likely not going to get it anyway!

I'm like you guys I don't wat something slowing my broadhead down other than the bird. Deeper the better in my opinion.

I prefer to have a complete and full penetration on all game shot.

If the arrow stays in it hinders it's quick exit
