Widow shooters...what string?
« on: March 19, 2011, 09:28:00 PM »
picked up a MA in a trade, been awhile since I owned a Widow...I tell ya these bows always have shot well for me. I think it has a standard widow string on it, with four spider silencers. still a touch loud with a little buzz to it. was wondering what the majority of the Widow shooters are using for a string and silencers?

thanks, larry

I put an 8 strand SBD with some wool yarn silencers on my last one and it was the quietest widow I ever shot.

Use the black widow string with cat whiskers (I don't like the widow silencers, may look cool but they don't last).  Go to the Widow website and get recommended locations.

Using wool yarn where the string hits the limbs work well also.

Larry,
I have been using "stock" BW's strings on my PTFX with good results.  I have a set of the hush puppies that are sold here on the string.  It's quiet.  I played around with brace height, too, and it made a difference.  I tried one of the skinny strings but took it off.  It had a sort of twang sound to it.

If its an MA check to see if it is FF or not.

That being said, I have a pre FF MA which I use their srting and Hush type stuff on.  Wool and wool loop pad.  Its quiet  28" draw @ 45# with a 9.3gpp arrow.

I like an 8-10 strand Atroflight or ultra cam on widows with bow hush or woolie whispers.

TS-1 plus with wool-yarn silencers, Real quiet. I also silence string at tips with wool as well.

For my PMA I use the Widow FF string, bow hush type yarn silencers, and a single set of the spiders, 1/4 spacing on top, 1/3 on bottom.

Stock BW FF string with string leaches; spiders didn't work or last at all for me.

What Huntschool said, since some MAs are not FF compatible.

Just went from a skinny string to a standard made at home b-50 14 strand with cat whiskers for my pchx. I played around with the brace height and arrow weight on both strings. I really couldnt tell much difference between strings. For me it is the set up of the bow and arrow weight with the cat whiskers. 51#@28 with brace at 8 and 7/8 and an arrow at 525gr. Either way it is just fun to shoot. Bill

I've always used the stock D97 strings on my PMA & PSA but have heard guys are getting theirs toned down with skinny strings.Might have to try one.
Larry,I use felt between the String and limb tip and catwhiskers where they make the most difference.Play with braceheight,my PMA likes 8 3/4,and I'm shootin' a 10 gpp arrow.Enjoy your new toy. Jeff

Any stock widow string I have ever seen was like a rope. I always shot 10 strand D-97 with padded loops a braceheight of almost 9"s and wool silencers at 1/3rds on the string. Shawn

Larry, I've been doing a lot of testing on my Widow with the strings I've been building for Lefties R Us.

What is working best for me is an 8 strand D10 or D97 with loops padded with Dacron.

I use wool silencers at the 1/3 and 1/4 points of the string, and wrap wool yarn around the string where it contacts the limbs.

This combination has my Widow pretty quiet even with my fairly light (8.5 gpp) arrows.
