My "last" longbow, Mohawk or Hill????
« on: March 20, 2011, 02:45:00 PM »
Need to Order ( cannot find one in my specs) what I hope to be my last longbow. Is it going to be a Mohawk or a Howard Hill???? Will be an all around bow, exercise , hunting, target and meditation
( ahh.....moving meditation). I own  and shoot/shot  Great Northerns, Hills, Thundersticks, Red wings and Bears. No Mohawks yet but they look great and price is right. Gonna be 62", elm and Osage, 46-48# @ 26.5, Straight grip.
DO I WANT A TRADITIONAL "HOWARD HILL" or A NEW "MOHAWK"???? ARRRRR!!! decisions decisions. But I think we can all agree one of the most important one's in life. "What honey? ... Oh nothin, just checking my email.
Thanks for opinions and help ahead of time.B

Sounds like you have Hills.  I'd be for giving the Mohawk a try.

"Last bow"?  You're in denial and in need of professional help immediately.
In the meantime, if you have Red Wing recurves and Hill straight longbows; you already have what are among the best of those classes of bows.  Try a Mohawk and see what a mild R/D bow is about; I think you'll be impressed.
After you get the professional help and admit you're hooked and need yet another bow, then try a Widow or Tomahawk full R/D and you'll have covered just about all the basis.  Of course then you'll have to start all over again and buy one of each made with yew lams etc...

Swamp Yankee "sound wisdom!". If he doesn't own a Hill he needs to get one.

Ahhhh....the old "last bow" thread.  Tell me about it.  I have four "last bows", two Hills and two ILF-rigs.  I think my next "last bow" will be a takedown Hill.  Good luck with your decision.

I don't own either one and from what I've heard you can't go wrong with either choice.  Maybe go with the Mohawk since you haven't had one yet.

I remember when I bought my last longbow, a Wes Wallace Royal T/D. That was 2 years ago.

Since then I've bought my "last" 102# Bamabow Hunter, 2 Monarch Imperials 80# and 68#, and a Howatt stick, 55#. Not to mention a 55# Shrew also. They each had the distinction of being my "last" bow.

I never had a Mohawk, but I could never say enough good things about Hill bows.  I had a Wesley Special, and sold it to buy me a RER LXR, and now I think I have found my last bow.

Have given up on thinking this bow is my last even if it seems to be a perfect match. I just take great pleasure in anticipating a new bow and thoroughtly enjoy the new experience.

'D' shaped bows are my actual favorite to shoot although I don't shoot them as well. Just ran a couple of hundered arrows through a Mohawk over a few days last month. What a marvelous experience!

Don't have any experience with the 'Hills' but I know the Mohawk is a great bow.

My wife realizes that there is no last bow and looks at it as an opportunity. If I get a new bow, then she get something of equal or greater value.

there is no comparison 'tween the two bows as they are different in many ways that may not be visually available.

hill style longbows have narrow and deep limbs, with either some reflex, or straight, or follow, and brace to a "D" shape. as a result of their design, they are very stable, require longer bow lengths for a given draw length, and yes, you need to know how to shoot them to reduce the hand shock to a thump.

mohawk longbows have wider, thinner, trapped limbs with both mild limb reflex and riser deflex. as a result of r/d, they can be more efficient and pleasing in shorter lengths for a given draw length. they also brace to a "D" limb shape.

having owned and shot a gaggle of both bows ...

hills are aesthetically the most pleasing longbows, whether unbraced or braced. nothing sez 'trad archery/bowhunting' than a howard hill longbow and a quiver fulla woodies. i love 'em, i want 'em, i'll always have 'em.

however, 'hawks are much smoother on the draw and release with zero hand shock, while maintaining a good degree of 'stability' on the release. these bows simply exhibit more performance - faster arrow speeds, no shock or thump on release and they do like heavy arrows.

choose wisely - choose both.

as always, ymmv - as it should!

I really like my hawk.   AND Vince is a great Guy to deal with.   I like the fact that he's the bower, salesman,  and dealer.  Can't go wrong with that.  IMO
