I just did it
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:20:00 PM »
I just got a 1968 Bear Super Mag 45#.  This is kinda neat to me cause one of my first two good bows was a SM bought in 1968.  Other bow was a Super Kodiak.

I foolishly (hind sight) let the SM go in 1971 or 72 cause I was shooting the SK more. I kept shooting the SK for a few more years.

I don't have pics but this bow needs a bit of refinish etc.  Already sent an email to Joe at Prarrie Traditions bow hospital. The bow should arrive here by the 28th or before.  I am pumped.  I have one of my origionaal bows back.  Its kinda a reunion for two old friends.

Now I need to find some of those yellow Bear Glass shafts

I'll post some pics when she gets here.

Good for you.  You won't be disappointed with Joe's work.  He just refinished a recurve for me that looks better than it did when I bought it new.  Look forward to pics

Good going! Hope it makes you feel like 1968 again. I'd like that myself, since that would make me 18 again

Congratulations Hunt School, I had an old Bear when I was in high school, I can't even remeber what model, sure wish I could get my hands on that. I hope you enjoy it as much as you did back in the 60's

Bruce you are in for a treat when the box arrives back from Whip. I was born in 1964 and would like to get a Bear bow in that year along with some greenheads so Fred and I could hunt together some. Mason and I have two nice Bear bows that are Grayling era, mine is a 56" Grizzly 1969 and Mason has a 1967 Kodiak Magnum. Both are in mint condition and we get them out several times a year so Fred can hunt on.... Mason usually whips my butt shooting in the backyard but last year for a few weeks I spanked him everyday with that 56" Grizzly and woodies. I could not miss the foam golf ball that we try to beat each other hitting first. Sure is fun to be in the, " Zone " every now and then, just got to figure out how to stay there, haha !!! Please post pics of Whip's restoration of a classic when it arrives bud.

I should see the bow by Saturday if ya can trust USPS.  I will "play" with it a bit and perhaps even turkey hunt with it when we get back from Collegiate Shotgun Championships on April 5th.

I am going to order a new string for it today or tomorrow and get some other goodies ready.

The little devil is the right poundage to have some fun with.

I think I am gonna ask Whip to put me in the loop and I'll send him the bow when he is ready.  That way I can play with it...

Huntschool i somtimes envy your older guys. You got to experiance bowhuntings infancy. Even in my short bowhunting career starting in 1989 the advancment in so called bowhunting and the flood of knowledge there seams to be a loss in the simple pleasure of hunting just for fun. Sorry of topic but just my thoughts. By the way my first bow was a jennings t star and i wish i had it back.

Paul Jr.

You have a wonderful feel for this sport.  I wish there were more "young" (today is my birthday and the years are stacking up) young folks shooting or at least looking at shooting.

We (older guys) are here to help you all and this site allows that to happen in a big way.

Keep it up son... There are rewards to many to mention

Huntschool,

I think I saw an earlier post where you talked about this bow. I've got one one the way as well. A Leftie at 48# with the black case as well. 1967 vintage. It was in the classifieds, a bit pricey, but I couldn't  get it out of my mind. I saw one in Tradbow Hunter in an article on Bear bows. It was $89.95 in 1967, but I had my first job that summer at $1.00 per hour, so lots has changed since then. I never had one, but always wanted to try a shortie and that time looms....
