bighorn bow
« on: March 28, 2011, 10:26:00 PM »
I picked up an older Bighorn bow from a family friend. There was no string included. How can I tell if it is Fast Flight compatible?

Older Bighorns (as with most older bows) would be safe with dacron.  I wouldn't use fast flight on a bow without the original bowyers recomendation.

No fast flight, don't need them on the Bighorn.

Same idea--NO FAST FLIGHT. You don't need it anyway. I have 2 that are fast flight rated but quick with just b50 dacron flemish. Started shooting Bighorns in '84 and have only used flemish b50 since on all 6 that I have owned.
The Bighorns are great shooting bows! Look where you want the arrow and it appears there--- well most of the time!
Other things being equal, it is the man who
shoots with his heart in his bow that hits the mark.

You can divide the Bighorn production in 3 periods;the first is the original curved bed limbs,it is B50 only. The second had a straight  bed limbs and you can reconise the ff tips compatible with a beefier and bulkier tip.The third is the KOM era Bighorn and most of them had the Bomb Proof tips that were FF compatible and once again you see a bigger tip.A pic could be useful.

Stupid question but what do you mean by curved and straight limb beds?

The limbs are curved where they bolt to the riser and the riser is curved to accept the curved limbs. If the limbs are straight where they bolt to the riser it is straight limb bed.

That is straight limb bed and the bow is a later Big Horn after Fred sold.

OK that shows that it is a flat bed riser.
Now if ya could show a pic of the limb tips we could tell if it is FF compatible.
From what can see it looks like a nice lookin' bow.

That one doesn't look like the bombproff tip to me for FF. IIRC it should have 2 layers of black.

So I take it this bow is OK to use with a Fast Flight string?

Better safe than sorry I say.  Go with dacron.  It will not be the end of the world.  Just my opinion though.
