Fletching jig...determining offset
« on: April 02, 2011, 11:45:00 PM »
I'm getting ready to fletch my first batch of arrows. Purchased a Grayling with straight clamp to start with.

My question for Grayling users: where do you set your offset with the straight clamp? Specifically, which lines are you on for top and bottom magnet adjustment?

I'm using 5.5" LW shields, fletching tape, and GT 3555 with Onestringer wraps, just to let you know the setup.

I have a different brand of fletching jigs than the Grayling but with all of them, you should adjust your jig so that the entire feather quill will lay on your shaft.  Clamp up a feather without your tape and move the front and back adjustments for offset to where your feather quill is still laying in full contact on the shaft, then lock it down.  You should end up with a couple - few degrees of offset from straight down the shaft.  After you apply your feathers with the tape, add a dab of glue to the front and back end of each quill for security.

Ray said it well.  I'd only add that if you do use an offset, make sure the direction (the front of the feather is either left or right of the rear when viewed from the rear) matches the wing side of the feather (left or right wing).

Post some pics if you can. Everybody loves to look at arrows...
If you hunt with your kids when they are young, you won't be hunting all over for them when they are teenagers.
