Antlered bucks still??
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:32:00 PM »
My son was out to the deer woods thursday the 7th and saw a eight pointer running a doe around an open field. He said it looked like it was Nov.

Anyone else ever see something like this-this late.

I picked up a drop with 4 points Friday.  It was quite white, and the tips of 3 points were chewed, so it has been laying a while.

kstout,

Where ya at in BR? My camp is by Big Jackson School, off of 19 mile rd. Small world.

From what I understand, bucks hanging onto antlers longer, or dropping antlers early is often a sign of herd stress.

Meaning, perhaps poor food, poor herd structure, over population for available quality food, skewed antlerled buck to doe ratio, stressful rut, they drop early. And vice versa.

From what I've read, bucks holding onto antlers later is perhaps a signal of better overall "herd health".

Timing of shedding is one of the last and least understood thing about whitetailed deer. Stress from injury or heavy rut will make them drop, but other than that anywhere from mid Dec, on through late April and early May... Most will have dropped by mid Feb.

One study I read stated an individual buck will shed very closely to the same date each year unless stressed then early, but other than that it's any one's guess.

I saw an 8-point friday night with a doe or possibly a bald buck. Saw him twice. Still wearing a nice rack.

Yep...there's still some in Bama that have their antlers.  I found a shed back in the first of March, but I have seen one last week that still had his antlers.

The latest I have seen a buck in full antler was April 1st. I was trout fishing about 3 years ago and he walked across the creek in front of me. Shawn

Saw a half rack 8pt. Saturday morning while hunting yotes.  This was near Ann Arbor, MI.
I had to do a double take when I saw him standing out in the field...strange!

According to our state game dept. it has to do with the levels of testosteron that bucks can sometimes maintain thru the winter. Heavy acorns crops in Ky seems to have helped keep the levels up. They also said that it will give this years herd a healthy booist  :campfire:

Less than a week ago I had 4 bucks at my feeder near the house. 3 of them had both sides and the 4th one had dropped both sides. They were all smaller bucks. Three days ago I saw a small buck there with both sides still on, Steve
