What do I need to know about bow strings??
« on: April 11, 2011, 02:33:00 PM »
I went to the local pro shop and asked for a string for my 1966 Bear Kodiak Magnum 52 inch model.

AMO specs 42# at 28 inches but it's actually 46# at 28 inches according to the shops scale.

So they sold me a string for 6 bucks...its a 12 strand Dacron...tag on the package says B649 if that means anything. The SERVING on this string is very heavy and my arrows fit pretty tight however I am getting excellent arrow flight.

I wondering though if there is a better string for my bow?  One that will improve my efficiency as far as transferring the bows energy to my arrows?  I know I can sand my nocks so they dont' fit the string so tight but I don't want to do that until I have the best string I can get for my bow.

Advice??
1966 Bear Kodiak Magnum
52"
40# @ 25"

Black Widow SIW
56"
51# @ 25.5"

You have to use a dacron string with that bow.Your string should be right for that bow.Your nocks shouldn't be too tight on the string.Put the nock on the string, holding the bow horizontal, arrow pointing downward, give the string a tap with your finger-near the nock. The arrow should come off the string.

I adjust them by boiling water in a cup, hold the nock in for 30 seconds to a minute and pry open with a butter knife. Some sand the nock throat till it is right.Too tight a nock will definitely affect arrow flight adversely.Good luck.
