A word of caution...
« on: April 11, 2011, 07:10:00 PM »
Yesterday, I took my beagle to the range at our local club.  As I walked through the woods and shot the targets spread throughout the property, Rowdy (the beagle) was enjoying a romp in the woods.  Being the beagle that he is his nose was in the ground and he was bitten by a copperhead.  It didn't look good last night, but despite extensive swelling he's eating and it is looking like he'll be fine.  So enjoy your time in the woods, but never forget that there are things out there to be wary of.

I'm so glad we don't have to worry about that here. All we have is Garter snakes. Something good about living in a cold climate! Hope he's doing better soon!

Sorry about your beagle.  Be happy it wasn't a cottonmouth.  I had to "detach" one from a chocolate lab once.  Not a fun job but most dogs seem to get over it...he did.  Good luck.

wow, I hope all the best for him. My black lab got bitten square on the lip by a good size rattler. His head swelled up to the size of a basketball and was like that for a week. He pulled through as I hope your dog does also.

He should be o.k., my black lab got bitten on the nose by a copperhead last summer. Lots of swelling at first but a lot better the next day. No lasting effects.

Hope he makes it.  Seems there's always some freak accident waiting somewhere.  I learned a lesson last fall when I lost my 2 year old lab to a well in an abandoned farm yard.  One of the worst days of my life.  My dogs stay close to my side now!

My old Chesepeake would point snakes and turtles then inch up on them.  Rattler bit him in the neck and he was dead before I could get him in the truck.

I went through avoidance training with a shock collar with "Lucy".  I won't say it hurt me more than her but it was close.  On the bright side Lucy will stop then run from snakes now.  She thinks looking at them will shock the crap out of her.

Sounds like that copperhead would go good on a bow limb!

I hope your little buddy get well.

I have to admit I'm amazed he didn't die considering the small size of a beagle.

Also I never realized the ability of dogs to live through a bad snake bite so often.

My 10 year old Dachshund got snake bit on her throat, 2 fang marks, never saw the snake but we have rattlers and copper heads around. I waited until the next day and took her to the vet.Was told that after 12 hours the anti-venom won;t do any good,(this was past the 12 hrs) He also said that the anti-venom is the same stuff they give to people and it costs $500... She came out of it fine after a few days, but really had me worried for a while.. Good luck to you.. We dog lovers know what you are going thru..
