Little known book about Howard Hill!!!!
« on: June 20, 2007, 11:09:00 AM »
On my recent bear hunt in Idaho, I was presented with a copy of the book, "The Evolution of an Archer-EARLY ADVENTURES WITH HOWARD HILL" by Don Carson.

Ted Fry of Raptor Archery was intrusted with the original manuscript by the authors widow and has made this important book available at his own expense... book publishing is always a gamble and quite expensive.

It is currently available from Raptor Archery directly and that's the only source I know of at this time.  Early Adventures with Howard Hill

The book covers many unknown exploits of Mr. Carson and Howard during the period of Hill's mid twenties at the Opa Locka golf clud where he served as archery pro for the late Glenn Curtis.

The relationship between Mr. Carson and Howard continued into Howard's California years and beyond.

Very enjoyable and a must have for a Hill library.  Don't remember how I stumbled on it, but I got one last year.

Nearly 10 years ago I picked up a 1st Edition of "Will Adventure" by Hill for $30...for a friend building an archery book collection.  When it arrived, I checked through the book, because you never know what you will find.  It turned out to be inscribed and signed by both Howard and Elizebeth Hill.  Don Carson's name and address were penned in the upper right hand corner.  The Indian names Hill used in the inscription match the ones from Carson's book.  Needless to say, my friend [Dean Torges] received am "unsighed" copy from my collection.   :)

It is likely I never would have uncovered the relationship between Don Carson and Howard Hill if Ted had not published Don's papers.

Don's book provides another view of Howard Hill and is an interesting piece of history.

I found a copy of it at a garage sale a few years back.  Hadn't heard of it's existance until then and really hadn't heard anyone talk about it until now.  Good read and interesting stuff!

Boy , thanks guys. Yes liquid amber hit the nail on the head, this book lead me on a journey learning more about Howard Hill . This was going to before Howard was famous, an area we knew little about.
The book starts in the mid 20s and takes you through the exploits of Howard and Don.
Great bunch of history and as stated before ,pictures of Howard never seen before.
After publishing ( as Charlie said, no easy task) I sent copies to the surviving sons of Don and Ruth, they sent some great archery history pieces to add to the collection, one of the bows Howard made for Don in the late 20s ( story in book) As well as both Howards and Don's beaded headbands from the archery club they were in. They all had indian names for the club, Howards was Big Chief one shot and Don was known as Young Chief Little Goat( another story in the book). Ruth sent before her passing a scrapbook of Don's that has decades of archery history and articles involving Howard Hill, magazine and news paper adds and articles.
She told me when she sent these items as well as the manuscript , " Thank God I found you as my family does not care about archery and this stuff would be thrown in the trash when I die".
Wow what a loss that would have been . I knew when I received this manuscript I was being handed a batton and that it was my job to preserve this story. The book is dedicated to Howard as well as Ruth Carson, who kept the book safe all those years.

Pretty dang hot in there around midday... air conditioner is on the list, but needs to be in the window.

Got a few numbers off that "Natural" and got an idea what I'm doing. I'll keep you informed.

You get caught up on your "Barry Whites"?  ;)
