Ugly Pig Down
« on: April 17, 2011, 12:18:00 PM »
The weather was supposed to be bad yesterday in my part of Georgia, so i decided to slip out after lunch to see if i could sneak up on a hog. It would also give me an opportunity to try out my new Kuiu camo and my Dan Toelke Lynx takedown.
The bad weather blew threw earlier in the day leaving behind blue skies but 25 mph winds.  i love a good wind when i am hog hunting, but the wind kept shifting from W/SW to W/NW.  According to the weather report it was supposed to shift to
W/NW around 5pm.
i hadn't cut any fresh sign, so i just enjoyed the scenery until the wind decided to settle down...

After covering a couple of miles without stumbling over any fresh sign, i decided to go check out one of my overgrown food plots. It had seeded out from the fall with rye, oats, rape, and clover, and the hogs had been rooting in it pretty good the week before. The wind appeared to be settling down also.
The food plot nestles up against a plum thicket and then a CRP field with volunteer pines scattered thru it.  As i eased up to the edge of the food plot, i spotted pigs at the other end!

The wind was right, so i eased back out of the field and circled back thru the plum thicket in a loop that would bring me out close to the other end of the food plot.
As i approached the far end of the field thru the thicket, i spotted a pig down on her knees rooting. She was facing me, so i got down on my knees out of her sight and waited til she turned slightly away.  i eased about 10 yards closer and waited to see if she would give me a shot. She turned broadside, so i eased up to a knee, came to full draw, and released. The arrow hit her high and back but clipped an artery right under her spine. i was trying a new broadhead out....A 4-blade Steelforce Phathead 175 grain from Kustom King.  It did a great job!  She made it about 60 yards before piling up!
Thanks for looking!
