You guys ever try this
« on: April 21, 2011, 09:10:00 PM »
So turkey season is just about here where I live and I've been wanting a turkey box call for a long time I just didn't want to pay for a good. I have some nice wood stored away and I decided to try and make one myself. I don't have a table saw to saw thin strips for the sides and I had a 1 1/2" square block  I decided to try and make one out of a solid piece of wood. I drilled a bunch of holes in the center and then cleaned it out with a wood chisel. Then I took it of to my bench sander and sanded the curves I needed and believe it or not it works and sounds like a turkey to boot. It's a piece of birds eye maple stained harvest gold. I though I would share it with you guys. The craftsmen ship isn't the greatest but it works.

"Birds eye maple" sounds like it should be a good wood to make a turkey box call.  :)

Very nice. It would be really neat if you knew an artist to paint a turkey on the lid kind of like Glynn Scobey goose calls.

I wish I had your lack of craftsmanship   :jumper:   That is a beautiful call.  Now go call in a big gobbler with it.  Good luck.

Yeah I made one once. I quickly realized woodworking wasn't my calling. Good looking box.

Very nice, one of the most unique calls I've seen.
Having done so much, with so little, for so long, I can now do anything with nothing.
