The nicest '59 Kodiak Replica I've seen!
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:50:00 PM »
I somehow ended up with another Holcomb '59 Kodiak replica in my shop to put a grip on.    :bigsmyl:  Ed really outdid himself with this one - gorgeous bird's eye I-beam, flawlessly filled and finished Wenge slabs (anyone who's ever tried that before should appreciate it!) and... orange glass on the belly!

Gorgeous!

Reproduction you say        I Don't like that idea on the reproductions , a True collector would never buy a reproduction , If the craftsman can build somthing like that why wouldn't he just build his own desighn

UUUGGHHH!!!!  I've wanted on of these fabled 59's since I first saw one here on the forums!!  :)

Beatiful work, on a beautiful design.

I've worked just enough with Wenge to know it's a stubborn old hag that'll reward your hard work (and dulled tools) with only more hard work trying put a finish on it!  (It'll eat your nose from the inside out as well!!!)

Brings a tear to my eye because right now I know I can't afford one.

That's some beautiful work.

Very nice!

I have another coming very soon and I guess I should have Ed send it out for a leather handle, too.    Ed's bows are better than any factory bow out there and I'd buy his bows any day over an old original.

Ed always does a nice job. I have some of the originals and compared with those in this case the leather work looks sort of clumsy. I think I would prefer a repro. without the leather.

Well, I like it.  I also like the grip.

Joe, I wish this one was mine, but it was only in my hands long enough to do the grip.

James, clumsy how exactly?  I'm just curious how you go that from the pics, since the only flaws from my point of view comparing it to the dozen Bears with original wraps on my rack right now (down from 40+) are on the offside and not shown in the pics.

To that point: I carried the skived edge back a little over 2" from the edge on the offside under the wrap, but should have had a longer section that was paper-thin or the transition from paper-thin to full thickness needed to be more gradual; tough to tell without removing the grip.  I can see the transition though, and I'd prefer not to.

Jeremy, I think you answered your own question. From what I can see on my bows I think Bear used a thinner leather for handles? Also, both ends of the leather were "skived". I have a 57 coming for refinishing this week and the leather needs replacing so when I remove it I will try and get a picture to you. I need to see Ed soon so I will give the old grip to him, see what he thinks.

Bows always look better in person so that one must be stunning.  The finish looks perfect.
