You have the idea already, starting out with an inexpensive setup is the way to go. We started out the same way then went with the AMS reel after we found out we liked it. The AMS is the way to go but first you need to know if bowfishing is your thing. I have a 14' jonboat that my son and I use it's a blast.

The lazy do not roast any game,
but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

Although I only have one year of bowfishing under my belt,I find it much easier to stalk upstream.Seems I can get much closer, especially in calmer water.glen

Try to match your clothing with what ever the fish will see when they look up.  If on a lake wear light colors to match the sky. If in a stream near cover wear camo clothing. Yes fish look up all the time. Remember you are still hunting you are not fishing.

All of the prior advise is good and should be followed as well.  Wow who thought there was this much to shooting a fish with a bow?
Robin Hood. There is a name that has cost men many good arrows.

I think you can use the rods that they use at the end of drive ways with the reflectors.  Check the big home improvement stores in your area.
