I have a 57"  53@28 American Archery "American hunter" recurve that will be my learning bow til I buy a new bow next year (probly a widow pchx)

Im new to all this, what spine weight arrows do I need and any arrow recomendations. I don't want top of the line to learn with, is there a sponsor that sells ready to go reasonably priced arrows?

Thanks guys

P.s. I am buying the arm guard/quiver combo from FARR WEST that was in the sponsor classifieds. Not related to my post, just excited. Lol

Fin, where are you located in Montana?

It depends on a lot of factors such as how far from center the bow is cut, and how heavy of an arrow you desire to shoot. You could probably make .400 spined arrows work just fine by playing with point weight(I am sure other guys will chime in on this).

As to reasonably priced arrows; BigJim sells the Gold Tip Traditional arrows and he is a great sponsor on here. I am not sure if aluminum arrows are less expensive or not, but for carbons the GT Trad arrows are a pretty decent deal.

You'll need to know a couple of things.  First, what is your draw length?  Second, how far is your arrow rest from the center of the bow?  Look up Stu Miller's calculator, download it and plug in your information.  It will give you a good starting place.

I'd recommend getting a test pack of arrows from 3 Rivers to start off with.  You'll get a couple of arrows in 4 different spine ranges.  You'll also need to get a variety of different point weights.

Any of the sponsor's will give you good service.

I would figure out what spine you need and then spend the extra doe and go with carbons, such as the GoldTips mentioned above, I shoot carbon express myself, but again, I am sure the GTips are just as good.

I shop aluminums for years until someone here at tradgang turned me on to carbons, I have saved a fortune in arrows since then as the aluminums were constantly getting bent, and I was shooting the better ones. Not to mention always having to check them to see if they were straight after each practice session, then constantly straightening them when possible.

You will have to check carbons to make sure they don't have any cracks after every shoot, but I have only had one crack in 2 years of thousands of shots and that only because I dropped a shot short while stump shooting and hit a huge rock! DK.

x2 on the 3rivers test kit. i would also recommend a field tip test kit.

as far as arrows go, i have shot easton axis and liked them as well as the traditional only 3 rivers. quite a bit different but have been very happy with both.

good luck on the widow, they are fine bows.
