Phoenix Broadheads this year! >>------->
« on: April 27, 2011, 10:19:00 AM »

These will be in my quiver as I go in search of the mighty wapiti. Made from one piece of tool grade steel, single bevel, and that great 3:1 dimension, plus teflon coated, these beauties fly like lazer beams. I made up some 80#-85#'s and put the 150gr glue-on "Phoenix" heads on them. First arrow out of the 54#@28" Blacktail X'd the bullseye without a wobble in flight. Yep, Stan you make a great broadhead. I had no problems putting an edge on these also. Very easy. Did an unscientific test in the foam broadhead target. These heads did penetrate a couple of inches deeper than the 2 blade I had used last year.
Thanks Stan and Red Feather Archery!

You won't be dissapointed David! Unless you don't draw   :banghead:   I put one of those babies through a moose last year and it didn't even slow down, a great head. And Stan's not too bad either  :)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed Steadman! If not I'll have to introduce one of these little darlings to an Oregon bull/buck.

Do they make a screw in modle in 150 or 175? i like the idea of a single bevel 3 blade but i just dont shoot wood. Humm i guess some adaptors could work.

Well did some surching and found some glue-in adapters that would work and allow me to keep the same total point weight. I see some testing in my future.

Wish they made them in left bevel ... all my other single bevels are left.

Ssoden, just fletch up a 1/2 doz RW helical and put some Phoenix on them and life is goooood! haha

Wtpops, they have 100gr screw-in heads that look great. Just do the 50gr adaptors and then screw-in the 100gr heads and you've got it!

Good looking broadheads. They remind me of a Wensel Woodsman. One question. How tough is the tip? In other words, do the tips curl if they hit something solid like bone?

VPA produces the head, Stan designed it from what I understand.

I haven't killed a critter with mine yet, but I have missed (LOL) and the tip hasn't curled.

They're a great head and are super easy to sharpen.  Pretty cool how they rotate in a target and they really penetrate well.  Personally I wouldn't hesitate to use it out of a lighter setup.  I think they next ones I'll get will be 125gr screw-in.

Can't answer that Night Wing. I haven't put them to the test against bone. But I can tell you that the way they are designed they are "spined" along the middle with solid metal. The blades themselves are thick. I think it would take more than a bone to curl these. But once again no scientific testing done on my part. As Steadman said he had no problem with killing a moose.

They are made by the folks who make the VPA broadheads as well. A very well built head

Hey David, great looking arrows!  I betcha I'll be shooting some that look a lot like those this year too  ;)

Sawtooth, I'll be chasing deer this year with these same heads from a bow that is similar to what you have listed in your byline, a 60" 45# Super Kodiak, or if I'm up to it a 50#er in the same model.  I'll let you know how I make out.  With any luck I may get my second spring turkey with one as well.  I'm not worried about broadhead performance, but operator error could play a part in my success!

As was mentioned, the heads are machined by Jeff at VPA.  Had a chance to meet Jeff at the ATA show in January and he's one of the best guys in the business!

I haven't tried the Phoenix heads but hear nothing but great thing about them. I'm just not comfortable shooting a 3 blade out of my set up. However.......

Hey Stan!    :wavey:    when you gonna get them two bladed demons on the market???        I vaguely remember something about a new two blade that RFA was gonna make, or was I dreaming? Just curious, and by the way I LOVE my Talons! Gonna try and get me a few more before April is over. Thanks RFA!

Snag,
Nice looking arrows. I'll take 3 please.    :)    I'm shooting 51#, so the 80-85# may work, but I might need to back down to 75-80#.
Thanks,
Ron
