What does Traditional mean?
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:04:00 PM »
I was just reading an ad for a carbon bow. I thought is a carbon bow traditional so my question is what does traditional mean?
Hopefully you will see me as a better person today than I was yesterday..

Trad Gang's official answer is a bow without cables and wheels.

My definition would be no mechanical devices which assist in drawing, releasing the string or otherwise shooting the bow.

A carbon bow would qualify as long as it is not a compound or a cross bow.

Others may have different definitions....

Get ready for the great debate.  I agree tradtional is a bow w/o wheels but from there on you will get lots of opinions.  In the end as yourself if anyone's definition really matters to you.

Traditional, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.  Hundreds of opinions out there and probably all are valid so you can see how this type of thread would develop.

Enjoy shooting what you shoot, if someone asks you for advice give that advice freely whatever equipment they may shoot and be appreciative of the camradarie that you share with your fellow archers.

Thats "traditional" to me.

Good shootin', Eric

I like no cables and wheels and a vertically held bow.  Because of the controversy over Trad with some I try to use the term "recurve" when I refer to what I personally shoot.  I realize others shoot other types of equipment but I don't.

Along with no cables and wheels i like to know that i had to put time and effort into it to be able to be accurate and not relient on several things to hit the same spot over and over again.

Traditional to me means:

It's about the hunt
It's about the memories
It's about the self-betterment (is that a word?)
It's about the friendships
It's about nature
It's about history

It's about anything EXCEPT the equipment!!!

That's precisely why I got burnt-out on the wheeled bows.  It started feeling more like fashion (what's hot this year, what's still hot from last year, what's going to be hot next year...blah blah blah) and less like archery.

A "tradition" is a practice or belief handed down from one generation to the next.  "Traditional" as related to an object is something made to perform as old items did or appear old (as opposed to "old", which is just a used something that has been hanging around.  Aka: "Vintage").

So, what's a traditional car?

Well put Terry.... anything after what Terry stated is what you make of it. "Traditional" is your personal preference. Make it whatever you want it to be... just so it doesn't have wheels and cables   ;)
