?? @ Spiral or 3, 4 fletch flu flu's....Help !
« on: May 06, 2011, 07:16:00 AM »
Want to try making some spiral flu flu's, sure would like to know some of yalls' tips and techniques, and if you prefer the spiral versus the normal 3,4, etc fletch....Have heard of reversing the feather backwards, any feedback on that would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Froggy

The spirals really die out fast! I don't turn the feathers backwards.  I kinda like a four feather flu flu myself. When I do make a spiral I use super glue gel. And go about an inch per revolution. They are easy to do

I've done both spiral and 4 fletch flu flu's,they both did fine.Personal preference, with spiral you can take one full length feather and make a flu flu.But I have also made the four fletch with cut off pieces I saved from full length. You can but together shorter pieces and still make nice 4x4 flu flu's.

I hunt a lot of heavy cover, so I want my arrow to die fast.  I have had some luck chopping shield cut feathers backwards, fletching them with the normal grain, (4 feathers) then using a 1/4 of a full length feather for a spiral on the ends.

This is about the only chance I have to get an arrow back while hunting in thick willows.

I trim the full length feathers to 5 inches, use contrasting colors such as orange/yellow and use a 6 fletch with a feather every 60 degrees.

They are easy to find and don't go past 40 yards, max.

Lanier. A tip I got from Stringstretchet is to get your quill wet and clamp them to the feather with clothes pins and let dry over night. The next day the feather will hold the spiral shape and be easier to glue. I use tape for mine and dab the ends with glue. Another trick is to rub the feather over the edge of a counter or something to help lOosen the quill but Charlies tip works best. I prefer spiral over regular Flu Flu's.

I prefer spiral too. I like the way they fly, and think they just look better. Also tend to fit better in my safari tuff quiver when small game hunting.
Check out Gurus thread in the "How to" section. He does a nice job showing how to do spirals.

5 feathers look neater but spiral works better for stopping arrows (we use em for arial targets)

Hey steve shrank. Do you have any pics of that style you could post? Thanks.
