Shiloh in July, Any tips?
« on: June 24, 2007, 11:12:00 AM »
My long awaited hunt at shiloh is scheduled for the third week of July. Anybody ever hunt Shiloh in summer? Should I bring a bugsuit, snake chaps, or anything along those lines? Any tips will be appriciated. My groups hunt was orginally scheduled for the first weekend of last December when a big ice storm hit the midwest. The boys and me got stranded on I-44 near Ft. Leonard Wood in southern Missouri. We sat in one spot for eight hours. Finally we made to a hotel for the night only to wake to find the roads were all shut down.
The folks at Shiloh were nice enough to honor our deposits for a opening they had in July. So I'll be heading to OK in a few short weeks. Any advice?

Permanone, nothing better for beating the chiggars and ticks.  I got a tick at Shiloh this last FEBRUARY if you can believe it!  Early Feb. too.

Stay patient and still in the stands...try to pick stand locations that put the stand downwind or crosswind to the feeder.  Be prepared to get busted anyway, but don't quit more will likely show.

Stalking is a blast in the morning and daytime.  Go very slow, play the wind, pigs will be bedded in the dark shady spots and will be easy to miss.

Be picky with your shots, anything less than perfect on a hog makes for a long day or night and often no hog.

HAVE FUN!!

Hey, Jodi...our group was at Shiloh during an ice storm the 3rd week of January..what a mess. That storm in December left us without electric for a week.

Bring a thermacell for sure and something with deet.

Tell Matt and Cheryl hi for me. The cabins do have air conditioning.  :scared:

You'll have a great time!  Ditto on the Thermacell and/or permanone.  Bugs are pretty wicked there this time of year.  Give Matt and Cheryl my best.  They are both terrific folks.

Permanone and chaps would be in my packing list for this time of year.  If you hunt the stand locations put yourself downwind and in cover on the ground.  The hogs I swear look up to see if the stands are occupied. We had great success hunting the creek bottoms last April, you can find the hogs bedded in the mud and have a chance stalk them.  You will have a great time, and good luck.

Not to highjack the thread, but I have a few questions-
1) Shiloh, TN?
2) What is Permanone?
3) Does the thermocell really work and can game smell it?

Congrats on your hunt and hope ya'll are successful. Got to be better than last time-getting stuck in Ft Leonardwood. I was "stuck" there twice myself! Good Luck.

Thanks for all the hints. I guess I'll have to check into a thermacell. They seem to be highly recomnded. Hello Ray, I lost electric during both ice storms too. DSARGE.308, The ranch is named Shiloh. It is located near Stonewall,OK. I have no experience with thermocells or permanone. I cut my teeth on deer hunting on and around Ft. Wood in the eighties. Took my first deer there and have lots of great memories hunting those big woods deer.

Jodi, We missed you guys at the rendezvous. Great time again as always. Permanone is great stuff for ticks. You spray it on your clothes several hours before you use them and let it dry. Kills ticks when they hop on you. Be sure to give us the full story when you get back.

Dan, I sured missed going, its the first one I've missed since 1997. I had to work and my wife had Lasik eye surgery on Friday. I'll be there next year. God willing & the creek don't rise. I'll fill you in when we return. Jodi
