I shoot a Montana lb 55# @28 with a 12 strand b-50 string and a 26" draw. My arrows are gt 3555 28" with 125 gr. tip and 150 gr. inserts. With my draw weight the arrows are right at 10 gpp. My question is can I switch to a fast flight string without loosing gpp? Stu's calculator suggests that I would have to lighten the arrow by 50 gr.s , that would give me 9.3 gpp what would you guys do?

I'm shooting a lighter arrow this year. A 2212 aluminum arrow out of my 42# and 37# bows. Both of my bows have a 2 bundle 12 strand Dyna97 fast flight bowstring.

Last year I was shooting a 602 grain 2117 out of my 42# bow and it gave me a 14.33 GPP arrow. Shooting a 535 grain 2114 out of my 37# bow gave me a 14.45 GPP arrow.

This year, shooting a much lighter 421 grain 2212 out of my 42# bow gives me a 10.02 GPP arrow. Shooting the same 421 grain 2212 arrow out of my 37# bow gives me a 11.37 GPP arrow.

I can shoot the same 2212 arrow out of both bows because the brace height is different for each bow. For the 42# bow, the brace height is 7 15/16" and for the 37# bow, the brace height is 8 3/8".

If your bow can handle a fast flight bowstring, I say go for it. A 9.3 GPP arrow shot out of a 55# bow is going to be heavy enough and it's going to be fast enough in terms of fps. That arrow should easily dispatch an elk.

How do you lose grains per pound(gpp) just by switching strings if you're pulling the same draw weight after changing strings??

I lose gpp because I would have to take out 50 gr. of insert weight.

You are still shooting a 55# bow but you may pick up 5 or so FPS. Your arrows may be a bit week now so you may have to clip them an inch and retune. Going from dacron to FF is not an instant fix.

ALL those charts and calculators are ballpark at best and the rubber meets the road when YOU do yer own testing and trialing.  take dat to da bank.

Changing from a dacron to a fast flight string should if anything make your present set up assuming that it is properly tuned show weak due to a little extra energy being transmitted to the arrow. It may have the effect of a lower gpp in that respect if that is what you were thinking. Likely you could correct that by building out your side plate a little.
