Eco-Dipper Question
«
on:
May 24, 2011, 12:29:00 PM »
Is anyone using the Eco-Dipper? I bought one and tried it via the video instructions from the Kustom King web page. I usually use Minwax water based poly so I tried that and it did not seem to leave any sealer on the shaft when I pulled it through. I have never used any other gasket system as I usually paint the Minwax on with a foam brush.
Am I missing something? Has anyone else had success with this system? If so, with what sealer?

I'm pretty sure you need to use a thicker finish to leave more on the shaft with the gasket system. I haven't used one but this is what I have read.

I've given up on the gasket methods, I have never had success in reliably weatherproofing an arrow in this manner. I went back to dipping, I use Bohning personally, and believe this is the superior method of finishing an arrow.

I have an Eco-dipper and I'm hooked on it. I tried it at first with sanding sealer but even as thick as that stuff is, it wasn't thick enough to coat the entire shaft. So I got some gasket lacquer and I couldn't be more pleased with the results.
I bought it at Cloverdale last year, and the guy I bought it from told me it was made to be used with gasket lacquer. He was correct, but I just had to try the sanding sealer first to prove it.

Mudfish, do you do a crown dip?
If so, what kind of paint do you use?
I have had no luck at all with my Eco-Dipper.

I tried crown dipping with the eco dipper using paint from the hardware. It worked but took 6or more passes before it became opaque. I used the normal gasket laquer from 3rivers for clear but found it was not suitably moisture resistant.

I use gasket laquer with mine. 30 minutes to do a dozen shafts. It works well over water based stains. I tried cap dip with the actual white gasket laquer and could never get the hang of it

I have not done the gasket lacquer over any kind of paint, it has all been over alcohol based dyes. I had one batch that gave me a surprise, here:
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=100052;p=1#000000
but those arrows shoot just fine.
I have read some negative things about GL on here but I have no complaints with the finish. Compared to wipe-on finishes it is much quicker and almost no mess to clean up. There is more info on GL here:

I guess I will have to get some gasket lacquer for my Eco-Dipper. I would like to find some white that will work for a crown dip. Do you ever have to thin the gasket lacquer? Does Duco work with gasket lacquer?
Thanks for the input so far.

I have not thinned it. Duco cement works just fine with it.

Duco works fine. It just takes forever to dry.

The Duco or the gasket lacquer?
Duco drys pretty fast for me (about 10 min).

the gasket lacquer dries nearly instantly. I generally leave a feather glued with Duco in the jig for 15 minutes, but could probably get away with half that long. have not noticed Duco taking any longer to dry than on any other finish.
