new york carp spawn is finally on
« on: May 26, 2011, 08:25:00 AM »
Big time!!! I think the high temps of yesterday kicked something off. I've been checking regularly and this morning is the 1st time this year that Ive seen them rolling in the shallows. I'll be after them with my 54#
Briskey elbow.  Anyone else seeing them?

The water's still awful high around here.  Haven't been to a lake yet to see if they're splashing up the shallows.

I havent been seeing any splashing yet but usually this is the right time of year. I figured with spring being late and all, I would have a few more weeks.

I guess the 69 Grizzly is coming striper fishing with me on Saturday.

Good luck everyone!

Got out of work late last night but gave it a go anyway. I tried about a mile from where they were in the morning in similar habitat but they were wayyyyyyy out in a deep channel. Water was real choppy and I didnt see a single one in range. Think Ill leave my neoprene waders home next time its 85 degrees! Shawn, say the word. I can usually get out after 3:00 so we should get after them soon as the water clears. Ill be working the opposite side of town so I cant check on them today.

The smaller ones actually taste pretty good Smoked. The larger ones can be made into fish patties. Run them through a meat grinder, mix in some eggs, breadcrumbs and onions, some seasoning of your choice and fry like a burger.

We didn't see squat last weekend, were hoping for some good shooting this one.

a recipe i've heard that sounds good is put the carp on a cherry plank. season with salt, pepper and juice from one lemon. bake in the oven at 350 for 12 minutes per inch of thickness. when it's done throw away the fish and eat the cherry plank. if this rain ever stops long enough for the water to settle, i think i'll give it a try. don
