Not the only turkey hunter in the woods
« on: June 01, 2011, 01:01:00 AM »
Well, today was the last day of spring season and I didn't fill a tag. Had way more fun than the law allows though. About a week and a half ago I had a bobcat show up 30 yards away and run off a Tom I was sure I would tag. Did not think it could get better, but it did! Was set up on the same 200 acres this morning. Had a Tom just onto posted property that I can't hunt. He had 3 hens with him. I set up where I could hunt maybe 300 yards away & 60 yards into the woods. Put out my b mobile Jake & hen decoys & started calling. He gobbled his head off each series but no closer. I changed to a box call to really amp the volume and let a dew series go. Gobble gobble but no closer. I was about to call again when I caught movement & saw black 12 yards to my left. Out steps a black bear & he is about to bite my decoy so I yell HEY! He runs about 15 yards, stops & looks at the decoys. I'm only 15 yards from the decoys and he has no idea I'm there. Not knowing what the noise was he circles about 20 yards to get the wind & is about 30 yds from me. He stands up on his hind legs & sniffs the air but can't smell me. He drops down & starts back at the decoys only I am between him & them. I wave my hands and say "what are you doing?" he stops and looks around like he has no clue what I am. Bow I'm thinking maybe I'm on trouble. He let's out a big huff, turns & takes off. What a day. I guess my turkey calling works on predaters as well as it does on turkeys!  I moved to a different spot but should have stayed there. Around 1130 that Tom was strutting right on the edge of that field. Maybe this fall.

What a cool story!  That's a hunt for the memory books that's for sure.  Thank you for sharing.

I might take that rush over a turkey...well, maybe not, but it'd be close.

How cool is this?... Not!.... I'm saying...hahaha!!

I would have been in dire need of some clean drawers if it had happened to me I can assure you!!

An eventful hunt that you will never ever forget is a given...lol

I've had several coyotes try to get my decoys, but never a bear.  Wow, I'll be thinking about this a little bit next spring.  Thanks for the story.

Way cool!!
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

That's cool! You can't experience things like that on the couch in the living room.  Good luck in the fall.

Yah, a hunt to remember for sure. Been talking to the wife about it. Was not as bad as getting charged by the 500# bear back in 07, but was more serious because this bear was hunting me & looking for food. My wife & I agree it is time for my brothers & I to start carrying pepper spray with us up there.

That's pretty cool! The strangest thing I managed to call in was a darn crow that kept following me around all day mimicking my calls.
