How is your elk draw??
« on: June 08, 2011, 07:03:00 PM »
I just got the word (email) from New Mexico that I drew my first choice for the second year in a row.   :jumper:
Can't wait. Now I have to focus on getting in shape after my hip surgery next Friday. That's going to hurt but it will be worth it!

Has anybody else gotten the thumbs up on tags?

Good luck on the Hip Surgery, don't overdue the rehab, listen to your PT

Man, you are lucky! Two years in a row?! I know people who live in N.M. and haven't drawn in several years. But that's the way it is with no preference pts.
I drew a LE elk tag in Utah after 8yrs. Going to be a fun year!

I live here and got my third choice. Looks like I will need to carry a bunch of judos. I'll be shooting a bunch of rabbits while chasing the one elk in the unit. Not happy.

Yeah, what's up with that Shedrock?! I guess you can't make too many plans for hunting other states when you don't find our until one month before the season starts.  Seems like all the states should just have a drawing in Jan. or Feb. Oregon you don't find out until mid June. Kind of ridiculous.

Congrats to those that drew !!!

I've drawn NM twice but not this year only California left for draw hunts...

Good luck with your hip but that tag is some great motivation for you   :)

Ermont, scedvm, I drew 6A ELK-2-184 (first archery). We will be hunting in the mountains east of Cuba. Got a great guide (Rob Degner) who knows it inside out. Same place I shot the bull in my avatar in 2008.

I had a left hip resurfacing last January and hunted elk in Sept. It held up great but I ground down the right side doing it!  this is a little close for comfort but couldnt be helped. Thanks for the well wishes.

Did anyone happen to notice that 2nonresidents drew 1st choice in the state of N.M. Hmmm just wondering if those puters notice the difference between $91 and $781. Naw probly not huh? Well guess I've just received my last permit.

Cool Arrow, There is a reason I have not applied in my home state for over 10 years. I did it as a favor to a friend and got screwed again. Third choice, I hate to think I'm gonna have to burn a weeks vacation for that.

I drew my 3rd elk tag in 3 years but it's in Northern NM and not as popular as most units. There's still plenty of elk though and it hasn't suffered the drought that most of NM has.

I went 10 for 10 on elk draws in high demand units then went 1 for 10 after that. At this point in my life I go with the best odds and good scouting just to get the chance to hunt elk in my home state.

beachbowhunter,
6A can be a tough unit but there are a few areas that get little pressure and hold a lot of animals.

I used to hunt a very popular unit , but I had three hunters from my home state of Mich. apply on my app. We always drew permits. When we would take a look around we could find no more N.M. lisc. plates . It seemed as though Penn., Oh. Cal., Minn, Ind. and on and on We we we re the only people from this state that wanted to hunt here. Does it sound as though I'm a bit bitter? Maybe so, but I see the same things happening all the way from D.C. all the way down to my county and city gov. Sorry I just had to unload.

Sorry I didn't mean to hit the add reply button because I wasn't finished. I'm angry. Why have we set back and allowed people to overrun our lives? I don't believe I made it clear that in those days when I received those permits , my cost would been about $60. With my friends it was in th thousands. Is this fair? Yes there is the  law of average, and we allknow that some people are inherintly lucky. But does anyone else out there believe that the system is in control? As I stated in my first reply I doubt If I wil ever again have the opportunity to hunt in my home state, but I had to speak out. Does anyone else experience this in their home state?
Well I guess I got that off my chest. Let's hear if you think I'm a butthead.

Norb,

Congrats!

Sorry to hear about the hip.  You need to find a good waterhole this fall!

Need to come out and hunt whitetails with us one of these years.

Chris
