Since May 13th, I've been struggling with this little rhyme.
Be careful of the words you say,
Keep them soft and sweet.
For you never know from day to day,
Which words you'll have to eat.
I must confess, since the first day (many years ago) I saw a 3 piece take down longbow, I never liked them. On many occasions, to the bowyer's dismay, I expressed that opinion to their face. That's not a longbow, don't call it one.
On May the 13th, just a little over 4 weeks ago at the Glenn Parker Memorial Shoot in Chester, TX I began an emotional struggle with that little verse. You see, it was on that day as I casually strolled by the Bob Lee Archery tent, and began looking at all the bows on display, one caught my eye. It wasn't on display, but was on the table next to Rob Lee, Bob's son. It was Rob's personal bow, a 3 piece take down longbow.....62" 52# @ 28". Rob told me that he had just completed this bow for himself two weeks ago and had already taken two good sized feral hogs. On both occasions, he said, "The arrows never seemed to slow down as each passed completely thru each hog." There goes the salesman's pitch, I thought. "Would you like to shoot it?" "Nope" was my curt reply and I walked away. Several times that weekend, I found myself back at the Bob Lee Archery tent. After more talking and with great reluctance on my part, I took Rob's bow to the practice range. I shot 6 arrows thru the bow and carried it back to Rob. "What is your delivery schedule like?", I asked. "Four to five weeks", was the reply. "I need to order one."
This morning JJ called me. My new bow (I still can't call it a longbow just yet) will be delivered TOMORROW. I'll post up some pictures when it gets here. But in the mean time, I'm going to the kitchen. I've got to find the brown sugar, honey and maple syrup. Got to find something to sweeten up my words.
