TRADGANG FUN SHOOT ROUND 4!
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:10:00 PM »
Dang I was hoping it wouldn't come to this.

Ok, I'm going to combine a couple of the ones already done. I'm going to start with a short senario.

You have entered a raffle for a week long caribou hunt in Labrador...and WON!!!

You've practiced in anticipation for all possible situations. You've researched on what you need to take with you and talked to several experienced Tradgang members and pretty much know what to expect. You are there!

You've been out a couple of days and have seen lots of caribou, but not yet close enough for a shot when one morning you and your guide are climbing a low rise and as you are able to see over it, there they are, a herd of maybe 20 with a few nice bulls. They appear to be coming in your direction!

You duck back down quickly and immediately start to look for a place for an ambush. All there is is a small outcropping of rocks, not tall enough to sit or kneel behind........

So you are lying on your back, and a nice bull is trotting up and luckily enough on the side that you need him to. He is 12ish yards and as he passes you get a slightly quartering away shot...

Again, the first shot counts as double. Practice all you want before you submit your entry.

Ya (sheepishly). One trick is to take a deep hold of the string, like Terry does for his upside down shot. Then pull your fingers back to the first knuckle. That pushes the arrow shaft against the strike plate.

I have a question.  Wouldn't it be more likely that you'd be on your belly and not on your back?  I've never, ever, after hunting all sorts of creatures, including caribou, in a situation much like you describe, found myself on my back. On my belly, yes. On my back, no. Just asking.

At any rate, I'll shoot it how you want, but I think you ought to at least post a video of you doing it  :) .

An interesting shot to say the least but holding the string like that is normal for me..

I can get this shot off shooting split, but no way 3 under.  I have never been able to keep the arrow on the shelf with a back bending cant without having two fingers making nock contact.  My nocks do fit lose once on the string so always have a bottom nock to keep them from sliding down.  Anyone else have luck shooting back canted 3 under?

Now that is a tough position, and not one that I have ever thought to practice.  I didn't score well......but I did better then I thought I would after a half dozen practice shots (I threw them all over the place).

My Score: 6x2 + 0 + 4 = 16

I've heard of someone who shot while lying on their stomach. I think they had to raise their torso up off the ground. I've tried that and I can not do it.

I can try and post a vid of my attempts. I've shot that way before, not great shooting, but I was able to do it.

I missed an antelope one year off my stomach, if it wasn't for the string catching my sleeve, I believe I would have got him. I used to practice a lot. This one should be fun!

Since we have been in rain for 11 straight days and the forecast is for a few more, this might be interesting. And the skeeters are about a pound apiece where I am now (Ft. Nelson, BC), so they should add to the frivolity.

I shoot 3 under and have tried this shot before. The only thing that worked was putting my index finger on the arrow to hold it there. Gotta be careful though cause it can screw up the shot in tons of ways. Definitely a bit of a handicap in this round...

As seen in one of my practice videos, I am known to have a beer or two while practicing. So ending up on my back with my bow in hand to shoot isn't really a stretch for me    :biglaugh:    :biglaugh:

Well the temps dropped back into the upper 80's and with me just dying to try this, I gave it a go.

Again I shot "Roi", Osagage Royale 66" 52@28.

I hope that the fact that I used a Styrofoam sled to lay on is ok? I doubt this old body could stand getting down in the rock of the driveway...lol

I am very pleased with my 1st arrow. I seriously doubt I could do any better.

I went on to prove that point with my next two shots...lol

Like before my 4 Fletch "Snag" arrow was my #1, followed by two 4 Fletch "Magnus" arrows.

In a hunt, this is the "only" one that counts...lol

God bless,Mudd

PS: Magnus I want you to know your arrows were not in any way at fault... It was and is this old sweating fat man trying to breath really warm and moist air while in a very unnatural position...lol
