I am fairly new to the Trad scene. I have decided to make my own arrows. I shoot right handed, do I need to order right wing feathers or left wing. Is there a right or wrong way to go. I just want to get the best arrow flight I can. Also what's the best feathers to buy Trueflight or Gateway or ....???? Thanks for any help in advance.

I have never noticed a difference. As long as all the feathers on the arrow are the same you are ok.

Some say True flight has better bases. I agree. One advantage of right wing is that screw on points tend to stay tight where left wing points will come loose due to direction of spin of arrow. As point stops in target the spin of the shaft while using left wing makes shaft spin to loosen point.

For myself I prefer LW because they index with my anchor better. With RW I tend to cut my hand shooting my longbow. I shoot an elevated rest on my recurve but still prefer LW due to feather alignment. Only drawback I see is that LW tend to loosen points on impact.

In essence, it just comes down to personal preference when choosing between left or right wing feathers.

I shoot both, right and left, and don't notice any difference. My points don't get loose, but I shoot wood shafts with glue on points.

If your points come loose, put a little string wax on the threads.

Oh, I prefer Trueflight feathers.

I like the left wing better, though they shot the same, the left wing seems to give me better clearence at the bow shelf. Field points do have a tendence to come loose but it's nothing a pair of pliers will not take care of.

I am with TSHOOTER the right wing feather cut my bow hand also. Trueflight do have a better base in my opinion,Gateway are to wide.

I am a left hand shooter and I shoot right wing I have also shot left wing it makes very little differance, however if you are going to get your feathers from a box store they will only have right wing feathers. The bases on tru-flight feathers are more consistain and the feathers on gateways are better looking sotake your pick of what you wish to shoot just remember where you are going to buy them from or if you are going to order them all.

Yup,I would go with LW, can be an issue shooting some bows with RW as they can grab ya. I also just cannot get used to the opposite spin, been looking at LW forever in flight. Old archery guy told me RH shoot LW and LH shoot RW for reasons above. Shawn

I did a bit of research( web searching) awhile back about left or right.They did l-r offset straight, helical. Can't remember where but the testing amounted to how many robin hoods they got with each fletch. the lw helical where ahead by a few compared to rw helical.The others where behind. Basicly if it works for you, go with it.JG

I shoot both LW and RW,I'm RH and see no difference.Plus if you are shooting carbon arrows,they have tunable nocks so you can rotate the feathers for best clearence.
