"Ishi, the Last Yahi" on Netflix
« on: June 29, 2011, 08:17:00 PM »
I like to use netflix to watch nature and historical documentaries. This evening while browsing Netflix's library, I ran across a gem that I thought some of you netflix-using-tradgangers might enjoy. If you use Netflix, type into the search field "Ishi, the Last Yahi". It's available for instant view even!

I don't have Netflix but it should be worth while. I have read two books on "Ishi" and am a true admirer of him. Can you imagine what it would be like to have all of your tribe killed and then trying to eke out an existence while remaining undetected, as he did for several years?

He had a very unusual way of shooting his bow, but I can't remember how it was exactly.

I watched it last night.  It's amazing how things have changed in such a relatively short time.

Gobblegrunter, Thanx for the tip, years ago I read the books on Ishi and was really moved. In fact my current dog is named Ishi... people always ask me about the name, they think its a name from Japan or something oriental. Then I tell the story of Ishi. BTW you once posted some pic. for me when I first joined Trad Gang and got my new Leon Stewart bow.

Ive also read a book on him, I believe he used a thumb style kind of like the Mongolian thumb release.

Awesome man though, pretty rough how he had it.

Probably a stupid question but ..... do you have to have a NetFlix account before you can order the free stuff?

He did seem to use a thumb-style release with his bow arm seriously canted and his bow hand palm-up.

Jason, I wish it could've had more stuff about bows as well. Either way, it was very interesting to learn more about him overall.

Frank, how've you been? I havent been able to spend a lot of time on TG recently...tough to when its so nice outside and you have 3 kids ya know? Hands down, that's the coolest dog name I've ever heard! I'll hafta remember that for our next dog down the road!

PowDuck, yea, you have be signed up and have a monthly subscription ($9 a month or so)

What fascinated me most about the program on Ishi is how he had an inherant sense of how a gentleman was supposed to conduct himself without growing up knowing anything about the rest of the world's culture. Special guy, for sure.

This book is free from the Kindle Store on Amazon. The Kindle app is free, too, for PC, Mac, iPhone, and Androids.

I'm reading it right now.

(Thanks. I figured you'd have to be a netflix subscriber.)

If anyone knows the release that Ishi used, can you post that? I tried it about 12 years ago but don't remember how it worked.
