a few new arrows for upcoming elk hunt

I was invited back out to the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado to hunt elk with my friend Kenneth in early Sept. My first(and only other) trip out there was in '06 and this is the first time I've been able to go back.
  With an elk hunt is my plans I needed new arrows made for slaying elk. Two of these were made with black walnut shafts that Ken75 sent me. He left the square stock on one end so I shortened that on one, rounded it off, added the orange flufly and made a blunt for grouse.
  The other two arrows are made from local sourwood shoots. All arrows have self nocks with sinew wraps. One BW and one sourwood arrow have Abowyer heads that Charlie Jefferson(stringstretcher) sent me. The other broadhead is one that Kenneth made and sent me. The head that Kenneth sent was big and heavy(at least 275grs) so I shortened and reshaped it. Both this head and the Abowyer heads sharpen well, easily and hold a keen edge. All hafted with pine pitch glue and sinew wraps sealed with super glue.
  The fletching on all the arrows are tied on with sinew fore and aft. Two are standard 3 fletch and one has 3 small goose feathers tied on in a tangential 3fletch...and of course the orange fluflu.

Thanks guys. I'm making a bow for this hunt. HHB self bow, straight limbs, 66"t/t around 55#@26". I shot these arrows today from my 60" bendy handle osage static recurve(same weight) and they all shoot very well. The shorter arrow with the goose feathers is silent death. The only sound I heard when I released was from my torn glove finger. If I can get a cow(not buying a bull tag this time) within 15 yards I may have a chance.
  Just being in the high country(9000' -10,000') of Colorado will be enough. Everything else will be pure gravy!
  James, unfortunately stone heads are illegal in Colorado or I'd have a few with me. That would be gravy on the gravy! d;^)

Used those Abowyer trade points last year on white tails, they are a good head!

Not to derail this thread but I have often wondered why some states won't allow stone points. If they are made well they can be just as sharp and deadly as a trade point or even just a regular broadheads. I know one of the best bloodtrails I ever got was from a stone point.

HHB bow.......keep us posted on the progress of making your bow. We have little or no Osage in this part of the country ,but lots of Hop Horn Beam. I'd like to see this Elk Medicine!!

I have NO experience with the type of arrows you are using.How do you tune a broadhead for good flight, after it has been sealed in sinew and glue? Thanks and good luck on your hunt.

Duncan, the nice thing about pitch glue is if the point becomed dislodged from the glue or needs to be straightened I just heat the point a little, reset the point, do a spin test and go on shooting it. It is actually easier than with a store bought glue on point.
  Thanks guys. I am really looking forward to this trip. It will be only my second time out to the San Juan Mountains and elk hunting. May even be my last so I will enjoy the trip no matter what happens...but bubbley red stuff on my arrow would be a dream come true.
  Ron W, HHB makes an excellent bow. I chose it especially because it is physically lighter than osage but of built right will make a bow that shoots as well as any bow wood. It is very similar to hickory but with better M/C control.
