Playing with New Chrono Fatal Styk and Super Wildcat
« on: July 09, 2011, 11:04:00 AM »
The "Pro" Chronograph arrived while I was in Arkansas this week.  I just set it up on the deck (shoulder height, 6' away, outdoors, sunlight with diffuser attached).

I piled the bows on the deck and shot two different arrows with 3, 4" feathers. The results weren't surprising to me and I had accurately "felt" which bow was the highest performer without the chrony  (at least in terms of speed) although none of the bows I tested are much different.

The arrows were Beman MFX Classics 600 and 500 spine weighing 415 and 505 grains. All bows are recurves. Strings vary from B50 to Skinnys. All bows have either whiskers or Sims leaches for silencing. I shot 3-under.

The Stick 58"-- Metal Riser 47#@26"
415 Arrow - 169 Ft. Sec
505 Arrow - 158 Ft. Sec

Widow PAX 58" -- 44#@26"
415 - 166 ft/sec
505 - 153 ft/sec

Silver Tip 58"-- 47#@26"
415 - 172 ft/sec
505 - 161 ft/sec

Habu Vyperkahn Hycurve 3-carbon 62" -45.5#@26
415 - 169 ft/sec
505 - 156 ft/sec

Bear Supreme w/Supreme #1 Limbs - 47#@26
415 - 163 ft/sec
505 - 150 ft/sec

Wapiti 61" - 45#@26"
415 - 160 ft/sec
505 - 149 ft/sec

As you can see only the Bear and the Wapiti shot much "slower" but in terms of bow range shots, not enough for me to notice. The Habu was my lightest weight bow and it shot with the bows that were 2-3 #'s higher in draw weight.

Next: I'm going to put some Rose Oak limbs on the Bear TD and see if there is a difference. Then I'll put the Widow PCH and PSAIII through the machine. I will also try  a Robertson Fatal Styk.

I was using a cavalier tab and I shot 4 arrows through the chrono. My variation was 0-2 ft/sec from shot to shot.  I'm also going to check Stu's Calculator to see what it says arrow speed should be with these set-ups.

I'm having fun with this. I also realize my 26" draw length is a bit of a disadvantage. I tried a bit to over-draw to 28" and see if I could tell a difference but I'll have to work on that as I didn't have a consistent anchor.

Your draw is your draw and speeds are only important comparing your speeds to your speeds; so I would not concern myself with overdrawing etc-comparing your speeds to someone else's speeds makes no sense at all. Keep 'em coming.

BJorn,
I was only seeing what would happen at 28" because I know some can't relate to my 26" draw. I wouldn't dream of trying to change my draw. As you precisely state, my draw length is exactly what it must be.  Althouth, I wonder... what if I wore two pairs of socks or found a thick phone book..?

Interesting.I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Brandon Stahl's limbs will smoke those Bear limbs.I would be that you will see speed at least as fast as the Silvertip.9 fps doesn't sound like a lot but it may it is the equivalent of adding 80-90 grs of arrow weight. That is a lot.I look forward to hearing more.Thanks.

You may wish to consider entering the gpp next to the corresponding results.

Sorry, I don't own any uncurved bows (except for one that has a lot of help on each end).

Yep, that gpp would be handy also.  I'll do the math on that and edit this post. My 600 arrow is 27.5" and the 500 is 27".

Here are three more bows.

Predator Anniversary-60" - 46#@26"
415 - 165 ft/sec
505 - 153 ft/sec

Widow PCH - 58" - 44#@26"
415 - 164 ft/sec
505 - 151 ft/sec

Bear Supreme w/Rose Oak #1 Limbs-56"- 46.5#@26"
415 - 167 ft/sec
505 - 152 ft/sec

Again, there really isn't a lot of difference. Of course my bows are all very similar in draw weight and length. These are bows that I've gathered that I like, that fit me, and shoot well for me.  My typical ranges with the tab are 150-152' or 164-167'/second with 4-6 shots.

I don't know that anyone could/should make a decision on a bow buy based upon close results like these.  As many of you already know, it comes down more to aesthetics, smooth draw, and how the bow fits and grips.

The biggest surprise to me is that the Rose Oaks weren't as much faster as I would have thought they would have been -- I have a pair of #1 and #3s and only one pair of Bear-made limbs -- the Supremes. I don't know how the earlier Bears or the 2011 Bear limbs would have done -- I sold the 2011 TD limbs a week before this Chrono arrived.  Frankly, I had suspected the Supreme Limbs were a bit better performers than older TD limbs by Bear. I suspect the 2011s are also improvements based upon how they felt to me before I moved them on.

The good news is I haven't found a dud in the bunch.

I'm not ignoring the "other characteristic comparison" asked for above. I just have to think about it. Of course that evaluation will be purely subjective and very personal.

Here's my priority for shootability which includes feel, grip, smoothness, and after-shot feel:

Gosh, this is very difficult!

Grip:
1. Habu
2. All the Widows (standard grip)
3. The Stick
4. Silvertip
5. Predator
6. Wapati
7. Bear Supreme

Smooth Draw:
1. Silvertip (even w/heavier draw wt)
2. Habu
3. Predator
4. Widows
5. Wapiti
6. The Stick
7. Bear Supreme

I have moved bows that didn't compare favorably (according to my tastes) to the ones above.

I have yet to test a Super Wildcat and a Fatal Styk. I haven't shot the Bear Mags either but I wouldn't expect them to be different than the Supreme because I'd be using the same limbs.

Well done Roy,really interesting.
Also if 5-7 fps don't look to be a big difference they can compared like a 5# heavier bow.

I just put the "older" model Habu bamboo core limbs on the riser. These make a 60" bow which is 59# @26". I wanted to see how much difference between these and the triple carbon newer model Habu limbs.

415 Grain Arrow -- 172 fps
505 Grain Arrow -- 159 fps

This is only 3 fps faster than the 5# lighter triple carbon limbs.  Interesting also that the Silvertip, at 2 pounds Lighter in draw weight, shot the same speed as the bamboo core Habu limbs.

I realize I'm busy splitting hairs here.

I'm am coming to the conclusion though that the Habu or the Tip will be joining me on the hunt this year. Frankly, I was about there even before the chrono "tests".  However, I definitely like the feel of the 44#, 62" Habu limbs better than the 49# 60 limbs and I'm not giving up much at all to shoot em.

Very nice job on the testing, Roy. I've always enjoyed my chronograph too. I like your consistency from shot to shot as well. Means you're getting to the same anchor every time. Good stuff man.

Look at my specs in my signature below. I was amazed at how close my Kanati is in performance as compared to my Predator I traded for it. Granted, the Kanati is one pound heavier in draw weight than the Predator was, but there was only about 2-3 FPS difference between the two with the same weight arrows. So, I took the silencers off of my Kanati and gained the 2-3 FPS back and it's still quiet and I have the same point-on distance as I did with the Predator!

I just searched up this thread again. I had not seen the theoretical calcs by Friend. I'm anxious to check my actual results with my GPP.

I'll get that Fatal Styk and Super W. on the chrono and report.
