What States have NonRes OTC tags?
« on: June 29, 2007, 02:31:00 PM »
I want to hunt elk, pronghorns and Moose. I am not sure if I will be around in 10 years so I want to get this done sooner rather than later. What states have over the counter license sales for these or any species? I figured it would take less time just asking here than doing a state by state search online. Thanks ahead of time.

For elk, I would sure look at Colorado.  Pronghorns are draw in most areas I know but are easy to get if you put your name in the hat.  For example, in Montana many areas require you to apply in advance, but tags are unlimited.  Moose will be the toughest one.  Alaska and Canadian providences are the only options I know of OTC.

There's no drawings for anything in Texas. If you got the money for a license, then we'll let you kill it. It's pricy though, non-resident general hunting permit = $300 good for any legal bird or animal. A non-res spring turkey permit is $120, a special hunting permit is $125 for exotics, birds other than turkey, non-game species, squirrels, javies, and alligators. There is also a 5 day special hunting permit that allows for the same animals but only cost $45.  http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/

Alaska is the only one that is OTC for moose that I know of.

Yea Mickey I looked at Maine "DNR" website last night after work(Good Grief what a night!)
anyway it's an actual raffle or lottery and you can buy unlimited chances. $55 gets you 10 chances and you can but as many of those multiple chance blocks as you want. The also auction off a certain number of moose tags. You place sealed bids in writing. The best thing was that the nonresident moose tag was under $500. I put in for the Kentucky elk draw. One of the few states East of the Mississippi to let nonres enter.

Curtiss, I'm in the same boat. I retire in 18 months. So many places to hunt.....so little money.
Is it too late to be what I could have been?

Good numbers of elk, including some great bulls, can be found on OTC units in CO.  Just get a little ways away from the road.

I NM when I lived there, seemed like the best way for antelope was a landowner's tag.  Not too expensive if I remember.  I think cow tags weren't too expensive either.  Landowner's tags are another option for you.  Steve

Here's an OTC bull.  With wheels...but I did use a Snuffer!
