summertime midday deer sightings
« on: July 10, 2011, 08:38:00 AM »
I was camping in Ashe county, northwest NC last weekend with the grandson. Hotter than the 4th...oh, excuse me, it was the 4th of July.  Riding over to a creek to set my minnow traps around 1:30PM, we saw deer out in the open at just about every Christmas tree farm/greenfield we passed.  Deer sightings in the area are certainly not uncommon at any time of day, year round, but this was uncanny.  I would have guessed there was a full moon, but couldn't tell due to it being overcast both nights.  When I got back and googled it, I was wrong...new moon. I've never noticed an increase in midday movement during a new moon???  Maybe all the holiday drunks and fireworks just had them temporarily scared out of the woods!

Pretty common in my area for this time of year. The does are nursing fawns and the bucks are growing antlers. The beans are at a great stage for the deer right now and they are craving them. I always see lots of miday feeding in late June and most of July.

I just seen a couple of deer in the field . It was 12:45 PM or so. The mosquitoes are terrible, and if its that the reason why they are not in the woods, I dont blame them. I had to do a double take because I couldnt believe I saw them out there , especially when its 85 degrees

We've had a lot of big storms move through. The deer around here will move right before a big front moves in and right after one moves out.  I had deer in our garden the other day right around 1 pm. It was over 90 degrees, too.

I always see lots of does midday on beans this time of year and have been lately. I've always attributed it to the fact the fawns were pulling harder on the. Did see five bucks on the beans up the road last night about 7:30- 8:00.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

July is a great time to see deer in the bean fields. The bucks are in velvet and dont seem to be spooked this time of year.

Couple visitors to the local food plot (my yard) today. Hope it stays local. Wont last long on the surrounding farms.

deer are out in full force right now in bean fields where I live.  I love watching them this time of year.  Many people would think I am crazy...but I would trade hunting in November for being able to hunt in August.  One of these days...I'm gonna go up to Manitoba and hunt in August when bucks are fairly predictable!

My brother, nephews, and I were on our way to the movies the other day and saw 5 bucks feeding in a bean field at 12:30 the other afternoon.  I was shocked to say the least because it was well into the 90's and humid as a swamp.  TRW

Go sit in the thick brush around noon and you will know why they are out at midday.  Humidity and no breeze makes it unberable, add a few mosquitos and you have a very unplesant situation.  They usualy hang out in some kind of shade but not in the woods.

Its odd seeing them in the middle of the day because we get so used to seeing them morning and evening when we hunt them. But I sure couldn't lay around in the weeds and let flys naw at me either! I can see why they get up and sonder around mid day.
