Permethrin
« on: July 15, 2011, 04:59:00 PM »
Has anyone tried mixing their own permethrin spray from the bottles of concentrate sold at farm supply stores?  I just finished off my bottle of Sawyers, and need some.  I compared the listed ingredients in Sawyers with what we spray our in our barn.  They appear to be the same.  Sawyers is a 0.5% solution, the concentrate is a 10% solution.  Calculate the proper dilution rate, and you're set. It's hard to beat permethrin for ticks, chiggers, etc.  Just spray it on your clothes, let it dry, and go hunting.  It's supposed to last thru 6 washes before reapplying. I usually go with 3 or 4.

Looks like that would have to be 1 part concentrate and 20 parts water.  sounds doable kinda like other cemicals like roundup that are lower concentration and a whole lot more expensive sold to the general public.

I use the same spray on my pants that I spray on the dog, I purchase it a Fleet Farm. However I thought the human concentrate was 1/2% and the animal spray was 1%. I could be wrong on this.

The concentrate I have says to use 8 oz concentrate to 12.5 gallons, 1600 oz, of water (that's a 1 oz to 200 oz ratio) for spraying on dogs.  If my math is correct, that's a 1/2% solution.  12.5 gallons is just a lot of spray.  I use maybe 20 ounces a year.

I use 1.5-2.0 oz of the 10% stuff in a quart spray bottle,  fill with water and spray the clothes.  I think that matches Chris's calculation.
I let them dry in the sun.
Seems to work great.

Bob and Chris are about right on their proportions.  My math was way, way off!!!  Been too many years since chemistry class.

I buy Duration TM Permethrin 10% Concentrate from Amazon and mix 16oz. at the time for a spray. That's 1oz. 10% Permethrin (2 tablespoons) and 15oz. of water. I haven't had a tick on me since I started using this solution...or chigger.
