Show me yer......nocks!
«

After several bows I have come to the conclusion that while I don't dread forming my nocks, I don't really like what I have come up with. I want something nice, a nice pleasing shape, something artistic that has good "feng shui" if you know what I mean. Mojo. Whatever you want to call it, I just want to see pictures of your nocks (whether you made them or they are production, custom, etc.) to get my breative juices flowing. Any thoughts on nock design and placement are great as well.
Thanks.
Semper Fi,
Mike

I like sleek, flowing lines. Here is a shaped but unfinished version.

I'm with you Mike. Asked the same question on how to make good nocks. Here's my first try at a bow I'm finishing now. It was suggest I round the belly corner a little more to prevent fraying. I'll work on it this afternoon and take more photos.

Same question Kenny had - how do you shape those so nicely with the pretty shape and even transition without getting into the glass lam on the bow? What's the back of your nock look like? I'm glad I re-did mine - the transition is much smoother and should be easier on my string.

SOS and Kenny,
if you want that rounded look, you have to pre- taper before the glue up. At least thats what I have been told. One of the cooler nocks I have seen, don't remember who did them, but they faded from square to round in three levels.... if that makes sense. Looked real unique.

Here is a mini-slide show of how my tips have progressed. I,like most of you, don't really like shaping the tips. I have found out, however, that with a little imagination you can really make the tips a show piece on your bows. I hope I don't bore you to death but I am going to post quite a few.
This is on one of the first bows I ever built.
These are some of my earlier tips. My first try at an antler tip, and the beginning of the style I use most often.
The next few are basic but pretty nonetheless.
More on my next post.

Then I started playing with splicing the tips to make them more interesting.
And finally my favorite to date. Sorry the picture isn't better. This one was hard to do because the tip fades into the glass at an angle to match the limb splice. That's sheep horn.
Instead of dreading the tips, now I look for ways to make them stand out. Makes the work less painful when you're finished. Mike

Beautiful...and here I was just trying to keep my bow from blowing up!
Bowdork and holm-made - got any photos from the side? I want to leave enough for strength and to try some no-stretch strings, but I know if it is too thick, long, blocky, etc, that's just extra weight slowing it down and adding hand shock.

SOS and Kenny, If you want that rounded transition look then put a layer of clear glass down as your first layer of overlays. Chad
