G2 on South (tip) Texas
« on: August 02, 2011, 05:23:00 PM »
So my wife just got a great promotion with her company, but the job is in Brownsville, TX!  We currently live in El Paso but will be relocating shortly.  Can some of you please give me the "low down" on that part of Texas from a hunting and traditional shooting perspective?

Thanks.

Well, I have lived in lots of places in Texas, Dallas, Houston, Corpus Christi, Lubbock but never Brownsville.  You'll be close to South Padre Island so that's good.  You'll be close to some really good hunting but most all of it is leased land on big ranches and that can get pretty pricey.  I wish I could be more help but if you can live in El Paso you should have no problem in Brownsville.  Best of luck..

Thanks for the reply - amen on El Paso!  Although, there are some decent hunting opportunities close in NM and AZ!

I'm from McAllen, that's just 45 min. west of Brownsville.  Good hunting within 1 hr drive north of Brownsville, but it is all expensive private land.  There is however, awesome public hunting in Laguna Atascosa.  It's one week of archery for around $50.  Usually on the 1st week of December.  I took a nice 13pt. P&Y buck there back in '94.  Haven't hunted there in awhile, but I have friends who are successful every year.

Lots of high fence ranches and rifles in that part of the state.  Even low fence ranches can be pricey to hunt. Just not much public land on the eastern half of the state...well, not much public land in the whole state.

You might have some good luck hunting hogs in the off season. They're a big time nuisance for ALL the landowners.

Thanks to all of you who replied.  Sounds like Laguna Atascosa and trespass fees/ranch hunting!
