Arrow Spine and Tapering

Did a search and either missed the topic or am blind. Anyway, was wondering how much (if any) effect tapering a wood shaft has on the spine of the shaft. Say you have a shaft spined at 50#. Would tapering lower the spine of the shaft? Thanks for any information.

Depends on the taper you use.  Full length WILL affect spine.  An 8" or so nock end taper will not change spine significantly.  When you are "customizing" a shaft I'd say you'd best have a spine meter to check though.

My experience with a 29” BOP 11/32 shaft tapered 10” to a 5/16” nock showed approximately a 2 lb decrease in dynamic spine.. haven't fooled with tapering since..

I discovered the same thing as Javi, about 2#. Most bending takes place mid-shaft not at the ends.

MOst comercial shafts that come tapered  are a 10" taper and does not change the spine much . I taper my own and put a 16 inch taper on it and it DOES lower spine       Not a huge amount but some   Since I have a spiner also I jsut respine and make sure im where I should be.
  I just made a few arrows for my son  for shooting at Denton started with 70/75 shafts  they came down to pretty consistant  68# +or -     Shot great from his B WIdow

Hildebrand told me they lose about 5# in their 12" taper

I loose about 5-8# on 32.5" fir shafts(Surewoods).These are 23/64" shafts tapered to 5/16" on nock end, and a short taper to 11/32" on point end. How much you lose might depend on how stiff you start out - I use heavy spined shafts in the 104-110# range; before tapering they are around 115#.
