what should I put on the broadhead to keep sharp
« on: August 04, 2011, 03:25:00 PM »
Hello,

I am sharpening some broadheads for a friend and when I am done I want to keep them sharp for the next month. Is there some type of wax or vasoline I can put on the edge to prevent corrosion?

Vaseline or dipping in melted candle wax will both work.

+1 for the chapstick

Nothing will keep them sharp for very long though. If you find they're not as sharp in a couple of weeks, try just stropping them (cardboard or leather). That's usually all that's needed to bring them right back.

I have been using a gun care product named "EEZOX" and it is the best thing I have ever used to keep them sharp.

I use hot melt glue and spread it all along the edge.  It peels right off when you need it gone.  It also works to carry your arrows in a bowquiver. I leave a couple with the glue off and the rest have the glue still on for protection.

on any edge that may cut through something im going to eat,  i use 2 things,  cooking spray (Pam or similar) or Butcher block conditioner-   Both food safe.

I use these on kitchen & hunting knives,   seems to work on broadheads too.

Wipe 'em with chapstick.

The inside of whatever broadhead protection you have will wear em down over a couple of weeks.  Chapstick will slow down the oxidation that kills most sharp edges, though.

Do you guys wipe such products off before the hunt or just shoot the critter with chapstick covered blades?

I keep a coffee can of paraffin wax in the workshop.  Dip finished BHeads in the melted wax.
