Help me find a retro Rucksack
« on: August 06, 2011, 12:23:00 AM »
Hi all,

For some time now I have been after a retro style rucksack as a day hunting pack but have come up empty handed.

I am not really after anything in camo... More so something along the lines of something outa WWII, if u catch my drift?

Well Kifaru makes a WW1 rucksack but I don't care for it. Duluth and Frost River are the last word in rucksacks as far as I'm concerned. I have a Filson rucksack as well that is super nice but they cost a mint.

Hunting was hazardous, but at least it guaranteed the freedom of the individual.

There is no doubt that the onset of farming saw the end of leasure for the majority of people, who were destined to toil in the fields.

LL Bean had or has an European style of rucksack, not camo. Similar in looks to the Filson. Olive drab with canvas/leather.

Filson has an excellent green canvas day pack.

Something like this.....

Fjallraven Vintage. It comes in 20 & 30l sizes.
It's a close-weave, cotton body with leather closures. It's not water 'proof' but i've had mine out in a good rainstorm & it didn't get soaked inside. The straps are buckle adjustable, cotton padded webbing, with a padded waistbelt.
It has an internal plastic support frame & mesh back panel to keep your back cool.

I've been using one of the 30l for about 4 years & love it! It's got all the looks & style of a pre-war pack, with the comfort & carryability of a modern rucksack

I like that one Rob. That looks like a "Waxed Cotton" material.
I have had a few jackets "Barbour" made with that stuff from Merry ol England.  Cool stuff.

Kelty is making a line of vintage packs. Kelty is really good gear too.  I've carried one of their backpacks since high school, in the 1990s and it still is holding up great,.except for the smell.

Here's one thats like the one Rob posted.

Not vintage but, my Frost River Summit Pack is about the best I've ever used. It is waxed canvas and here in Oregon, that comes in handy.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. TGMM ♥

I would risk losing my native-son-of-Duluth status if I didn't give you this link:    Duluth Pack Company Daypacks & Backpacks .

My wife has two of their bags. I grew up using their canoe packs. They're a class act all the way around. (And now their products are even trendy, which amuses me greatly.)

I've bought a bunch of mil-surp hunting gear from Sportsman's Guide.  I usually wait until I'm in the Cities and swing by the South St. Paul outlet but their catalog and internet sales are pretty good.  Last time I was at their store they had a Bear longbow that I couldn't afford at the time.
