Wasps and osage
« on: July 01, 2007, 11:50:00 PM »
:help:    I've lost some osage staves to borers in the past and don't want it to happen with the staves I finished splitting out today.  How do you guys keep the bugs from getting in your staves?  Thanks!

Spray the bark with diazinon or remove the bark and sapwood and apply 4 thick coats of shellac.

Eric is correct. If you use bug spray, you should reapply it a couple times per year.
If you peel it and seal it, you should have no troubles. I seal mine with a thick coat of wood glue. Shellac or even paint will do the job, too.

Thanks guys! I guess I'll start with the diazinon.  I have too many staves to get them all peeled before the bugs get them.    :help:
