Did you get your fill of wide open places????  I was just checking in my pocket ref book...California has more people than ALL of Canada, LOL, so it must have been nice to have wide open spaces to roam with no people around ??? ;)

Well it was kinda a rough week. We had weather issues to deal with(constantly changing),very little bear movement for the first few days. Then in one day it all broke loose........

The first 3 nights in stand were pretty slow. Tuesday when Brad and I headed out to hunt we decided he would come in and bait while I got in my stand. When we got to my bait it had not been hit again! So I got into the stand and Brad hung the bait we brought with us in a tree about 5ft above the grond. Then he took a few pics and headed back out to the truck. As I listened to the sound of the truck fade I just had a feeling that it was gonna be a good day.

Before I get to far I do want to send a HUGE Thank You to one of our own. Bearfootin aka Lloyd Keene was kind enough to invite us all to his home when we got to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario on Friday night for pizza and beverages. Great guy! Heck we even had the pizza delivery guy sit down and have one with us. Many Many Thanks for a great time Lloyd!!

OK! Back to the stand on Tuesday afternoon....Soon the bush was all quiet again. Then it started the attack of the bait killin pine squirrels! They were all over and fighting each other and the chipmunks for their spot on the bait. Then they were joined by a big ole rabbit. While I sat and watched the show almost laughing out loud a couple times, little did I know that things were about to get interesting fast!

I did see one and heard them one day in the distance.

Anyway....Then it happened! There were a pair of good sized cubs on the bait! Ok......Where is you're momma? Then there she was of to my lefta at about 7 yards in the brush watching the kids. As the cubs ate and battled each other for their share I got ready and tryed to remain calm. Momma then started to move in, and quickly spyed the bait bag Brad had hung in the tree. She came in sat down and raised up in a sitting position grabbed the bag and took off to my left again at about 7 yards to eat. after finishing here snack she came back to the bait and came in behind the cubs giving me a full broadside.

It all happened so fast! I drew released and wtched the arrow with the Simmons  Landshark 160 zip right through her. She didn't even act like anything had happened. From there it's long story short. The hit was too high and the blood trail ran out so we never found her even after getting everybody out for a long walk in the Canadian Bush. That's one I'll be thinking about for a very long time to come!!

Sounds like you went thru "no-man's land", that area below the spine and above the goodies, kind of a void area, if the blood ran out, I'm betting she will recover, she will just be a bit more educated!  ;)
Too bad on that one LeRoy, but I did hit a deer in that area once, some blood, then nothing, not a drop, nothing vital to keep bleeding.

Meanwhile, in another part of the Canadian wilderness some 10 miles away from the action, I was sitting in a tightly nestled group of pine trees a mere 10 – 12 yards from my bait.  It was a very active bait with many Pope and Young squirrels, chipmunks, mice and birds voraciously attacking the sweet smelling and sweeter tasting (yeah I had to try out the bait for myself) bait pile.  6:55 p.m. found me deep into a book about Daniel Boone and his exploits when I had that feeling that something was different in the woods.  It was!
