Should I replace my string?

My bow was shooting great until the other day. All of a sudden it started having a vibration and sounding like a banjo. Couldn't figure it out . I checked every thing on the bow and couldn't find anything wrong with it. Finally I checked my brace height and found it had shortened , so I guess my string had stretched. I lengthened the BR back to where I have it tuned to and it's shooting great now. Do strings normally stretch after having 1000's of arrow shot through it or is it a sign of it needing to be replaced?

How much stretch are we talking? I notice a diffrence in my bow imediatly if it is out even say 1/8" to 1/4". If I am shooting in very hot weather I usally get some stretch. How old is it 1 year or 3 years is there wear on it? I shoot every day I will have 1000's of arrows in short order. So I would say if it looks good and is not a 100 years old twist it up and forget about it. Just use good judgement.

I've had it on the bow about 6 years old its Dacron endless loop. It was about an 1/8 of an inch off. Thanks, Mike

If it is 6 years old I would replace it.

A sudden unexpected stretching after a long period of not stretching could be a sign of strands breaking, one by one, under the serving at the nock point.  Replace that string!

Wow! I'm surprised a Dacron string lasted that long. McDave is absolutely correct though. You need a new string. That one doesn't owe you a thing.

I wouldn't shoot the bow until you've replaced the old string. One recommendation, order two strings.

Why put a bow at risk for the sake of a $12. string? I don't get it. If you shoot a lot, it is a good idea to replace your string every year or so. You could always use the old one for emergency backup on a hunt if you can't stand to part with it..

Oh yea I forgot to mention that I've only been shooting this since November. It wasn't used until then because after I ordered the string, I had to have hand surgery. I started shooting again last November and wasn't out of the package until then.

Changing it is cheap insurance but as was said earlier, order two. I always carry an extra in the bottom of my quiver. If a broadhead just touches a string wrong it could spell it's end and put you out of commission for the rest of the hunt.

I change my strings every 15-18 months. it s a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new bow.

Obviously, not being there and seeing the string, I could only guess at the problem.  However, that being said, I'll add my 2 cents worth.  If you're wondering if you need to replace the string, replace the string.  Don't shoot ANYTHING you're not confident of.
