Shelf fur direction help

I was rubbing the fur on my shelf and noticed that in one direction it was smooth and the other was going against the grain. So my question should it be smooth in the direction the arrow will be going?

Yes, the fur should be "smooth" in the direction the arrow will be going after release.  The "friction" should be on the draw.
