Slowin down
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:28:00 AM »
This past Saturday morning was finally a cool one and right at daylight I headed up through the 500 acres behind my house for some early scouting.  The day was perfectly clear and I could see my breath as I quietly made my way checking each oak tree for acorns and checking each of the 3 main bedding areas for how the deer are moving in and out.

I got to the top of the ridge and pulled my flint & steel out and made a quick fire & with a spit I slowly turned my apple over and let it roast.

The woods sounded, smelled and felt great.  I pulled a cedar from my quiver and looked it right to the kill zone of a stump from my longbow.

Now I walked slower with the world somwhere "out there" with all its noise and hustle.  I came upon a giant red oak and found it hanging in acorns and as I paused there a movement caught my attention.  It was two buck in velvet eating what acorns had begun to drop.  One was an exceptional 11 point and I let them feed towards the bedding area without spooking them.

The trails I found and the promising ground blind areas were just bonuses to a day that took me to a slower pace and a peace that God offers each of us if we take the time to enjoy it.

Reading your op just made my day a little brighter, and made me anticipate my Saturday scouting/slowdown day that much more.

Thank you.

And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.
