For bow up to 50 lbs I think the recommendation is 14 strands for a flemish string. I think the recommendation is for 16 strands for 60 to 80.

I use 12 strands of B-50 up to 55lbs. Not that I am trying for a "skinny" string, it just make the right size so my nocks fit good. Have never had one fail. I do change strings every 6 months to a year. Don't know how many shots but I shoot every day I can.

There was a 2006 TBM article called "String Theory" that stated the breaking strength of a B-50 strand was 47 pounds and that the number of strands used in a string really had nothing to do with bow weight but with the user's personal preference. I use 14 strands of B-50 because I like the finished diameter of that string. Using B-55 makes a string with a little smaller diameter so I have to double serve it to get my nocks to fit tight.

i just counted the strand number on my 87 lb longbow and it is 12 strand so i will most likly make me another 12 strand for the new bow hoping for it to be right around 45-50 lb got my fingers crossed,
