beeman mfx help for bob lee recurve
« on: August 31, 2011, 02:45:00 AM »
I want to order some beeman mfx arrows and need help choosing the spine I need. I just got a bob lee recurve and its 55lbs@29 inch I can shoot 125 grains and 200 grain broadheads. I dont have any problem using the brass inserts, just need some suggestions and a starting point. I was thinking the 500 spine. I do draw 29inches. I shoot 5 inch feathers and usually put wraps on my arrows too. I tried using Stu's calculator but didnt know what to put in for the rest and sideplate box. I'm using the bob lee rest too. Any help would be appreciated thanks brad

Hi,

i got a Bob Lee Signature with LB Limbs. Its 57#@my 30" draw.

I use Beman MFX 340s with a 50 grain insert, 145 grain points and a 10 grain footing and the bareshafts fly like darts, broadheads grouping with fieldpoints perfectly.
In my opinion, with youre draw and poundage 500 would be underspined, but thats just my 2 cents.

For stus calc, The bow is cut to -3/16; The lee rests are 1/16 thick as far as i know.

Hope this helps.

I would think the 400's with 100 grain insert would be fine. With 125 grain broadhead you would be just over 10 grains per inch too.   I have shot this set up out of 54 to 57lb bows and had good success. Mine were only 29.250" long though.

With the heavy inserts and tip weight you are looking at the 400 spine shaft for your setup!

I too believe .500 spine will be too weak, at your draw length. I can use them out of my Bob Lee, 53# @ 28", but I don't draw but 26 1/2".

can you just get regular inserts for these shafts or do you have to use the brass break off points, just wondering in case i need to mess with weight in tuning my shafts

Babs, you can use 400 or 340 beman mfx.
Try out  point weights, insert weights and shaft lenghts. So both shafts will work well with your bow.
Depends on the arrow weight you want.

I shoot 54# @ 29"with 340. I had to go with 75 gr brass insert and 250 gr point .They fly like darts but the next time I buy going to buy 400s.

Babs:  You have your answer here already, 400 or 340.  Which one will depend on how much you front load the shaft. I like 340's for that weight of bow, I have a 29.5" draw. The reason is I like a heavy arrow around 12 gr. per lb. of bow weight. My total arrow weight is 670gr. You just cant imagine the penetration of that set-up with some good sharp 2-Blade Aboyers or 3-Blade Terminators. If you want a lighter total arrow weight, say around 10 gr. per lb. of bow weight, you could shoot the 400's OK.
Either one you choose will work, I like your choice of shafts, my personal favorite, for toughness, accuracy and penetration, you cant beat them.  Good Luck....RW

They should come with the regular inserts and most venders will include the brass inserts with the purchase of the shafts but check before you buy just to make sure.
