we didn't see any elk that day but we found alot of sign. i found a shed from the year before and    some nice rubs.

we heard some other hunters in the area bugling but they were on the other side of the mountain.

our game plan was to try and catch the elk going back and forth from bed to feed b/c the elk were not talking yet.  we could tell all the elk were spending alot of time on one side  of the mountain b/c the  amount of sign we were finding. Milk duds everywhere! lol

dad and i would still hunt the ridge all morning. one if us high and the other lower... cow calling every 15 minutes or so  until noon. then we would get a bite to eat and sit over a water hole mid day and glass meadows in the evenings

on day 3 dad jumped a nice bull bedded on the side of the mountain. he couldn't get a shot. bull was out of there like a flash.

day 4 morning the hunting was slow. no elk to be seen and no bugling to be heard. we were getting beat down from the grind of waking up every morning and climbing the mountain everyday. that evening we went back to glass one meadow before we headed back to camp. we were going to pack out the next day at noon. we were creeping in the dark timber along the field edge glassing for elk. bouncing from one vantage point to the other when dad grabbed my arm and said.. BULL!! this bull was trucking it across the field.. he was below us walking up the meadow fast. we made a horseshoe through the timber and slipped in front of him. HERE HE COMES! he is closing the distance and he is walking this trail that is going to take him right in front of me. the wind is perfect for once and not swirling.... 50 yards...... 40 yards....... my heart is racing......30 yards... oh my gosh he is getting closer....20 yards i draw my bow... 15 yards... he stops!.. it was meant to be he stops 15 yards broadside and looks at dad who is behind me over my shoulder 10 yards back. i release my arrow!!!!!! PERFECT SHOT! all i can see is my white feathers sticking out of his side about 7 inches behind his left front shoulder! we wheels and hauls but! running  like a locomotive back through the meadow. he disappears into the timber! OH MY GOSH I JUST SHOT A BULL. dad and i sat down and re-caped what just happened. we waited 10 minute or so.. we decided to go back to camp b/c now it was dark.. i knew he was dead. but we decided to wait till first light to go look for him.......

the next morning we woke up, drank coffee and made it to the meadow by sunrise. we picked up the blood trail and found my arrow. tracked about 200 yards and there he was pilled up in a ditch

my set up was 53lb@26 Black Widow recurve PSA 56 inches long

CH 150's cut to 27inches. 150 grain grizzly elgrande 2 blade with a 75 grain steel adapter. 225 on the tip

around 550 total arrow weight.

my arrow buried all the way up to my feathers.

didnt get a pass through but i had 18-20 inches of arrow in him. double lung shot.

i did  alot of research on arrow weight for elk and draw weight! i know the elk died within 30 sec of when my arrow hit its mark. he ran at full speed and only went about 200 yards.

Congrats on the NIce Bull... If you were that tired packing in and from hunting hard for a few days... did you even feel tired packing him out? Or did the excitement give you a third or fourth wind?

I am wanting to go try this next year...

Do tell us more...
