What a great trip, thank you for sharing.
Archery is a family sport, enjoy it with your family.

Nicely done, great story-telling with supporting photos.  Very interesting, hope that you guys return next year and build upon this experience.

Awesome thread and pictures ... really a good retelling of what is a classic elk hunt! With most archery elk harvest statistics at not much over 10% there are obviously many more guys out there experiencing the type of hunt you had then those bringing home 300"+ bulls.
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Great read and the pics make me yern for the mountains once again.  Can't wait to make that trip once again.

Awesome adventure, some of my most memorable hunts ended with no animals taken, that is why success is so sweet.

Terry, That's Charlies Big River. 68", I think it's 49# @ 28 and it has an all phenolic riser. It is a real sweet shooter. I think I'm 3rd on the list if he ever wants to get rid of it....lol!

Terry,

That is a Big River Long Bow. It is made by John McDonald in WI. Very Near where I grew up. the only way to contact him is by phone call as he doesn't advertise or have the use of computers. I believe he is 83 or 84 and builds bows out of his passion for it.

Visiting him in his shop was truly a blessing as was his story of the nub buck he killed on his wall. I hope to make it back home for another visit in the next few years.

As Ron Stated, It's 68" but its 47@28".  It's 50lbs at my draw.

It is an all phenolic riser with bamboo limbs, painted black.  I love John's Bow's and saw a guy 3.5 hours to my east offered it up for trade.  I jumped fast and bought it not regretting it. Thanks Jwingman I hope your farm implements work out for you.

As Ron also stated he is on the long list of interested parties if I ever Die!   :readit:

When I make it to Georgia again, I will bring it with me. If we meet, you are more than welcome to carry it for the duration of my trip.

I hope to get down (Atlanta) next summer when my wife's sister has her baby. If I am lucky I will squeeze in a quick hog hunt in the process.

Regards,

It doesn't matter how or what you shoot, as long as you hit your target.

What a great read, and fantastic pictures!

Looks like another couple of victims have fallen to elk fever.  Things will never be the same for you now when September rolls around.  It is well documented that it is incurable. You will be overcome with a churning in your stomach and a pull so strong to head toward the west that you will not be able to resist.  The only cure for this afliction is to spend time in the Rockies!
